Individualism Of Pee Wee Russell

LP (Item 720972) Savoy, 1952 — Condition: Near Mint-
2LP Gatefold
With Ruby Braff on trumpet, Eph Resnick on trombone, Red Richards on piano, John Field on bass, and Kenny John on drums.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner, light wear, a promo sticker, and a trace of a price sticker.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Pee Wee Russell

Ask Me Now!
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold
A record that will blow your mind – way different than you might expect from the cover! Sure, Pee Wee was a bit of a traditionalist on his instrument – the clarinet – but he's working here in a starkly modern way that almost recalls some of the best 50s work of Jimmy Guiffre, or ... Frank Foster & Frank Wess

2 Franks Please
Savoy, 1956/1957. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Ouch, what a terrible title – and for such a nice album! The record brings together sides recorded by Frank Wess and Frank Foster for the Savoy label in 1956 and 1957 – laidback hardbop tunes that have both players working in easy-going company, with the feel of a late 50s Prestige ... Art Farmer/Ernie Royal/Charlie Shavers/Emmet Berry/Harold Baker

Trumpets All Out (Savoy)
Savoy, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
As you might guess from the title, the album's an all-trumpet affair, one that features 5 different players on the instrument – Art Farmer, Emmet Berry, Charlie Shavers, Ernie Royal, and Harold Baker – supported by spare rhythm from the trio of Don Abney on piano, Wendell Marshall on ... Jazz For Playboys
Savoy, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
One of those classic 50s sessions in which a bunch of Count Basie players split off from the bigger group and do some great small combo work on their own! The album is leader-less in its billing – but only because all the players are so well tuned to each other, and have such a simpatico ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charlie Ventura

Euphoria
Savoy, Late 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Tremendous tenor work from the late 40s – a huge collection of early Savoy singles done by Charlie Ventura, including some cuts with Jackie & Roy on vocals! A few other numbers features vocals by Buddy Stewart – but most are instrumentals, with lots of hard-wailing tenor from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1945. Near Mint-
Well, it's not the whole Charlie Parker Story – but the album does feature some great material from a very famous session, recorded on 11/26/1945, originally issued on 78s, along with extra tracks, compiled here in one of Savoy's posthumous Bird LPs from the early 60s. The group includes ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, Mid 40s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A nicely distilled collection pulled together for issue in the mid 70s, of Charlie Parker's work for Savoy Records – done between the years 1944-1948, with some of the best talents in the bop business! Some of the other Savoy Parker sets have been a bit too overstuffed with alternate takes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billy Ver Planck

Jazz For Playgirls
Savoy, 1958. Near Mint-
A really smoking little session – the brilliant follow-up to Savoy's well-known Jazz For Playboys album – and arguably a much better record to that one too! Billy's not the best-known leader of the time, but he's working here with a really top-shelf group that includes Bill Harris on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Savoy, 1944/1949. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Seminal sounds that bridge the worlds of swing and bop – mostly recorded for Svoy in 1944, the earliest days of the label – with a few tracks from 1949 as well – and a number of alternates appearing here for the first time ever! LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Tate

Madison Beat
Harmony, Early 60s. Very Good+
This was a follow-up to the hit Ray Bryant record, "Madison Time", and although it's an obvious attempt to cover it, it's also released by the same label (Columbia) that put out the Bryant version. Buddy Tate leads a tight little combo through "Madison Time", and a host of ... LP, Vinyl record album
