Red's Blues

CD (Item 720660) Prestige, Late 50s — Condition: Used
Out Of Stock

CD

✈
A cool collection of bluesy work from Red Garland – material pulled from the pianist's famous late 50s years on Prestige Records, including a number of cuts that weren't issued at the time of release! Some of the tracks here feature Garland working with a trio, while others have a horn player joining in – no surprise, given that Red's trio was one of the best backing groups ever used by Prestige. Other players include tenorists John Coltrane, Coleman Hawkins, and Arnett Cobb – who each play on one track – and rhythm players include either Paul Chambers or Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor of Charlie Persip on drums. Titles include "Red Beans", "Your Red Wagon", "Skinny's Blues", "PC Blues", "Prelude Blues", "Ralph J Gleason Blues", "Birk's Works", and "Ahmad's Blues".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Garland Of Red
Prestige/OJC, 1956. Used
Simple and soulful elegance from the great Red Garland – prime mid-50s material for Prestige, recorded here with incredible backing from Paul Chambers and Art Taylor! The tightness of the trio is amazing – but never so much so that it gets in the way of Red's warmly introspective modes ... CD

Soul Junction
Prestige/OJC, 1957. Used
Soul Junction's a great title for this one – because the album's a great meeting point between 50s hard bop and some of the looser, earthier styles that were beginning to show up in the first years of soul jazz! The title track of this one is worth the price of admission alone – as Red ... CD

Buck & Buddy Blow The Blues
Prestige/Swingville/OJC, 1961. Used

A wonderful batch of mellow, laidback balladry by Gene Ammons. Like a lot of the two-fers issued by Milestone and Prestige in the 70s when they came under the Fantasy umbrella, this set collects sides from a couple of different sessions, Nice An' Cool and The Soulful Mood Of Gene Ammons in this ...
