❔

...

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Steely Dan

Katy Lied
ABC, 1975. Sealed
Steely Dan really hitting the heights – moving into hipper, more sophisticated territory than before – pushing the envelope with both their music and lyrics, which are completely sublime! Janis Joplin

Pearl
Columbia, 1971. Very Good
The sound of a legend – a raw rocking classic from Janis Joplin – arguably the most perfectly-formed record from her all-too-short run in modern music! Crown Of Creation
RCA, 1969. Very Good

3 Down 4 To Go
Alithia, 1974. Near Mint-
A great album of sweet soul – and one recorded by a bunch of prisoners at the Rahway Correctional Facility! This was the group's second album, and by this point, three of the members had left prison – hence the "3 Down, 4 To Go" title – but that change in status doesn't ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Porter

Victim Of The Joke?
Enterprise, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
Probably the best-remembered solo album from David Porter – one half of the famous Hayes/Porter team that ruled Stax Records in the 60s, although not as successful as an artist on his own as Isaac Hayes! Porter's style is a lot more adventurous – and this album's a wonderful ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn

Mr Music
RCA, 1954. Near Mint-
A tight little record – with a strong focus on Al Cohn's solo work! Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus! Mingus plays piano and sings (yes, you read that right!) in a tight sextet with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Mingus is trying out a kind of messed-up, blues-inspired sound here – but for some reason ... LP, Vinyl record album
