Sonny Stitt & The Top Brass (Jazzlore)

LP (Item 719782) Atlantic, 1966 — Condition: Very Good+
A heck of a great little record – one that shouldn't work so well, but it does! For the set, Sonny Stitt's blowing in front of a larger brass section – and while the prospect of a Sonny Stitt big band record might not sound that great at first, this one really kicks, largely because of Sonny's great solo work! Stitt's in perfect form by this point – blowing freely above a core brass group that features Blue Mitchell, Jimmy Cleveland, and Willie Ruff – arranged tightly by Tadd Dameron and Jimmy Mundy, yet still given enough room to swing with a heck of a lot of soul! Also quite nice is the organ work on the set by the obscure female player Perri Lee – a great little groover with a lean sound that cuts through the arrangements and really makes them sparkle! Titles include "Souls Valley", "On A Misty Night", "Stittsie", "Poinciana", "Sea Sea Rider", and "The Four Ninety".  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Catalyst, 1977. Sealed
Lost late Stitt – and a much more compelling album than you might think. The album's got a nice underground feel, despite the fact that it's a tribute to Ellington – with a core combo that features Stitt on alto and tenor, Gildo Mahones on piano, Allen Jackson on bass, and Clarence ... Make Someone Happy
Roulette, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Stitt's on the Varitone here – blowing away on a mellow set of late night tracks that features some great original compositions! I Keep Comin' Back
Roulette, Late 60s. Very Good+
Like Eddie Harris, Lou Donaldson, and a few other aging soul jazz stars in the late 60s, Sonny Stitt turned to the electric Varitone sax to juice up his career a bit. And while he never used it to as good effect as players like Harris and Donaldson, he still managed to crank out some nice sounds, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Serengeti Minstrel
Atlantic, 1977. Near Mint-
A great one from Sonny Fortune – done with the fusiony sound he was working so well with at the time, and still filled with a tight conception and an incredible group of musicians who bring depth and deliver some really great solos! The three or four shades of the blues here are all pretty darn deep – as Charles Mingus is returning to the soulful gospel-influenced mode he swung big in the early 60s! Modern Jazz Quartet

Lonely Woman
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Truly one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's greatest albums – and a set that has an edge and a darkness that's missing from some of their other Atlantic records!
