Fantastic stuff – 2 beautiful albums of modal grooves that really deserve wider recognition! At the time of the recordings, Horn was one of the hipper players on the LA scene – working with Chico Hamilton's group in the late 50s, and moving out on his own as a solo act at the end of the decade, in order to explore freer ideas. One of Horn's biggest influences was the modal sound of Indian music, and on these two gems, he really opens up the groove in an amazing blend of rhythms, tones, colors, modes, and pulses that really make the records crackle! Players include the amazing Emil Richards on vibes and the lesser known Paul Moer on piano – and Horn plays both flute and alto, in a style that's very similar to his stellar Something Blue album on the HiFi label. Tracks begin with some tight bass and drum workouts, then the piano of Moers sets down lines that let horn and Richards groove over the top. Wonderful stuff – with only a hint of Horn's later hippy-dippy work, and some great tight jazz soloing. All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.
