Comin On Up

LP (Item 71532) Riverside, 1961 — Condition: Very Good+

An early 60s session by tenorist Sal Nistico – a great player who spent most of his life in bigger bands, but who also knew how to shine on small group settings like these! With Sal Amico, Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, and Vinnie Ruggero – all of whom make Sal cook a lot more than usual, and who give the set an early 60s soul jazz groove that was typical of the best work coming out on the Jazzland label at the time. 7 tracks in all: "Cheryl", "Ariescene", "By Myself", "Samicotico", "Comin On Up", "Easy Living" and "Down".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label Bill Grauer pressing with microphone logo and deep groove. Vinyl and cover are nice!)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Heavyweights
Jazzland, 1961. Very Good
They sure got the title right on this one, as Sal's playing tenor in a quintet that features all heavyweights, and soul jazz heavyweights too, we might add! The combo features Nat Adderley, Barry Harris, Sam Jones, and Walter Perkins – all of whom make Sal cook a lot more than usual, and who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Riverside, 1956. Near Mint-
One of the few records ever cut by this fantastic alto player from the mid 50s! Henry most famously worked with Monk, but his albums as a leader are great – and this one features Kenny Dorham, Kenny Drew, Wilbur Ware, and Art Taylor, all components of a totally solid Riverside lineup. ... Elvin Jones

Elvin!
Riverside, 1961. Near Mint-
A very interesting early session for Elvin, and one that's filled with lots of warm lyrical moments – nicely laid down by Thad Jones, Frank Wess, Hank Jones, and Frank Foster. These four came together often during the late 50s on some sessions, but the addition of Elvin opens things up ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ernie Henry was a fantastic alto player who only cut a rare few albums before his untimely death. Most folks will know him from his great work on a few Monk sessions – but this album features tracks that were the last the Henry cut as a leader, done in late 1957 shortly before he passed away. ...
