Summer Night

LP (Item 71428) Milestone, 1967 — Condition: Near Mint-

Early work by genius pianist Mike Wofford – moody and introspective, clearly inspired by Bill Evans, but also with an open feel that really sets the pace for changes in 70s jazz piano. The group on the set is a trio – with Monty Budwig on bass and John Guerin on drums – and although Wofford's playing acoustic piano on the set, he's got a fresh feel that's nearly electric at times. Titles include "Nimrod", "Nosey Neighbors", "Bird Of Paradise", "I Mean You", and "In Walked Monk".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Green label stereo pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Excellent early work from pianist Mike Wofford – a player who'd show up more strongly in the 70s, but who's already in great form here in this early 60s session! The album's quite unique – not the mainstream piano trio material that you'd expect from a major label at the time, and more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quite hip stuff from McTyner – really righteous sounds from his 70s run for Milestone Records, recorded with a great lineup that includes Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Gary Bartz on alto, Azar Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax, Bulster Williams on bass, Billy Hart on drums, and Mtume on ... Two excellent early 60s sides from Bags, both casting him in a larger setting than the smaller, tighter ensembles he typically worked in. Milestone, 1972. Very Good
Pretty darn nice stuff from McCoy Tyner, from a period when he was opening up to the soul jazz spiritualism that was around him – a movement that was clearly directly inspired by his work with Coltrane, but which also helped to shape his playing, and return the favor of influence. The group ... LP, Vinyl record album

A pretty great little live set – recorded at the Montreux Jazz fest in 1973, and featuring one of the better McCoy Tyner groups of the time! The album's a key set in McCoy's stretching out after the passing of Coltrane – a record that draws strongly from his 60s spiritual heritage, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Don't be put off by the late date of the session, because this is an excellent album from McCoy Tyner – and one with a very spiritual groove that's clearly inherited from Coltrane! A 70s Milestone 2-fer reissue collecting two great 60s sides from Yusef Lateef.
