2 LPs of Benny Golson quartet sessions – 1962's Turning Point and Free – back-to-back on CD! First up is Turning Point, a beautiful album showcasing the tenor stylings of Golson in an intimate setting with Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Golson plays two originals, plus standards, and his tone is fantastic throughout! This is one of the few efforts from the period that really shows him in an open-ended jazz vein, without a focus on his arrangements – which are excellent! Titles include "Turning Point", "Stella By Starlight", "Three Little Words", "Alone Together" and "Dear Kathy". Next up is Free – another great one! The material has a beautifully confident tone, with Golson's tenor cutting, changing, and swinging perfectly in lines that are masterfully crafted, yet full of raw emotion. This quartet includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums – and titles inlcude "Sock Cha-Cha", "Shades Of Stein", "Just By Myself", "My Romance" and "Just In Time".
