One of the best albums in a big 80s run from Tease – thanks to great production from Mtume! The album's got a balance of soul and style that really holds together throughout – as the group finds especially strong ways of coming across on the ballads and mellower numbers, which often still have some heavy beats at the bottom! In a way, the set's one of the first to showcase a new style of slower soul that would hit even more strongly in the 90s – laidback cuts that still have an urban punch, but at a slower bpm. Titles include a unique remake of "I Can't Stand The Rain" – plus "Kick", "Tingle", "Somewhere Somebody", "Let's Stop Pretending", "Bad Reputation", "Remember", and "A Love Of Your Own".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Gwen Guthrie's first album for Island Records – a unique little soul set from the early 80s, recorded in Nassau with backing from Sly & Robbie – in a groove that's totally great! The rhythms here are really at the heart of the set – not in a way that eclipses Gwen's vocals, ... CD
Liberty/PTG (Netherlands), 1981. Used
Classic 80s funk from Xavier – a group led by bassist Ernest Smith, who'd already had plenty of practice working with Isaac Hayes, The Midnight Movers, and The Coasters during their funky late 60s years! The groove here is similar to some of the other tight funk groups on Liberty at the time ... CD

T Boy Ross

Changes
Motown/PTG (Netherlands), 1979. Used
An overlooked Motown gem from T-Boy Ross – a self-produced set that's filled with loads of 70s mellow soul moments! Ross begins the set by covering Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" – and there's definitely a similar vibe to the record – that kind of warmer grooving that Leon ... CD

Epic, 1988. Used
You may know Gregory Hines best as an actor and dancer – but he's also a surprisingly great soul singer, too – thanks to help here from Luther Vandross! Luther produced the set, wrote all the tunes, and also duets with Gregory on one track too – making the set a Vandross-stamped ... CD

A lost 80s groover from The Netherlands – one that's done in a style that's very similar to American soul work of the time, but which also has a nice sparkly finish that's got traces of UK 80s soul! The keyboards are very nicely placed in the set – never too strong, and with some jazzy ... CD
