At Last (Original Chess Masters pressing)

LP (Item 709525) Chess/MCA, 1960 — Condition: Near Mint-

An amazing step forward for the young Etta James – a singer who was delivering a raw, shouting form of R&B just a few years before – but who here ascends into soul music heaven with her famous work on the album! The title cut is the stuff of legend – played and played, again and again over the years – but the whole record's wonderful, and handled with this new level of soul sophistication by arranger Riley Hampton – the great Chicago talent who'd reach similar heights in his charts for singers that include Lorez Alexandria and Walter Jackson. Hampton's dark use of strings brings out a whole new side of James' brilliance – a quality that raised Etta James up out of the R&B ghetto, and forever put her into the legions of legendary 60s soul stars! Titles include the perennial classic "At Last", plus "All I Could Do Was Cry", "Tough Mary", "Sunday Kind Of Love", "Anything To Say You're Mine", and "Trust In Me".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Chess, 1974. Very Good+
An excellent set of messed-up funky soul from Etta James – one of her killer early 70s sides for Chess! Etta James (1973)
Chess, 1973. Near Mint-
Heavy funk from the great Etta James – one of her standout classics from the later Chess years, done with a style that's completely different than her work of the 60s! Alicia Again
MCA, 1981. Near Mint-
One of the nicest solo records by Alicia Myers – formerly a vocalist with Al Hudson and The Soul Partners, but sounding even better here on her own. Thelma Houston

Qualifying Heat
MCA, 1984. Near Mint-

Backings are heavy on beats and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Summers & Summer's Heat

London Style
MCA, 1983. Near Mint-
Bill Summers' London Style here is one that's definitely influenced by the changes on the dancefloor coming from the UK in the early 80s – and the groove is a slightly more electrified take on the rhythms that Bill was laying down on previous albums for MCA! Overall, though, the sound's ... LP, Vinyl record album

A massive jammer from War – and a record that brought the group to a whole new generation of listeners – as well as a good number of later fans who discovered some of these jams in the club! Chuck Berry Twist
Chess, Early 60s. Very Good-

Certainly one of the lesser sorts of soul soundtracks that you'll find, and an easily overlooked Roberta Flack record consisting of tracks for this low-budget comedy with Cicely Tyson and Richard Pryor. Alicia Myers

I Appreciate
MCA, 1984. Sealed
A stone classic from Alicia Myers – one of her classic sets recorded during the MCA years of the mighty One Way empire!
