LP (Item 70040) Impulse, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
Brilliant work by Jamal – and one of his first albums to feature electric piano! The mode of the tracks is in that "stretching out" style he was using as the 60s came to a close – a bit inspired by McCoy Tyner, but more an exploration of the lyricism of his earlier work, set to the new freedoms of the jazz record style of the time. The group features Jamal's regulars Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums – and Ahmad plays both electric and acoustic piano on the album. Tracks include "Dolphin Dance", "Effendi", "Manhattan Reflections", and "Poinciana".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Argo, 1958. Near Mint-
Magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Happy Moods
Argo, 1960. Very Good+
A sprightly set from the Ahmad Jamal Trio – but also a record that's not as brightly colored as you might guess from the title, thanks to a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix! Jamal's piano work is often nicely punctuated – perhaps living up to the "happy moods" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmad Jamal

Jamalca
20th Century, 1974. Very Good+
A killer from Ahmad Jamal – a Fender Rhodes record that stands as a nice contrast to his equally great work of the 60s! Jamal was already a master of the subtle, soulful touch – and on Fender Rhodes, that quality comes out even more strongly – given some light support from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/MCA, 1961. Near Mint-
Killer stuff by Art Blakey – one of his few non-Blue Note sessions from the time, and a hard-wailing set that features the Jazz Messengers as a sextet! The format is one that flourished briefly in these early 60s years – and in this case, the already great lineup of Lee Morgan on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Keith Jarrett

Bop-Be
Impulse, 1978. Very Good+
No bebop here, despite what you might guess from the title – and instead an album of much freer lines and wider musical vision, captured with Keith Jarrett's famous group of the 70s! Jarrett plays a bit of soprano sax alongside his piano, and the rest of the quartet features Dewey Redman on ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A classic bit of avant Shepp for Impulse – recorded in the mid 60s, at the same time as the Live in San Francisco album, with the same quintet, but not issued until years later! The album is in a different vein than the San Francisco album – one that shows the band stretching out more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clark Terry & Chico O'Farrill

Spanish Rice
Impulse, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sweet Latin licks from Clark Terry and Chico O'Farrill – cut in a mode that's very similar to O'Farrill's best Verve work of the 60s! The vibe is kind of a mod take on Afro Cuban sounds – not really Latin soul, but with a playful vibe that mixes together jazz and Latin with equal parts ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Impressions
Impulse, 1963. Sealed
Brilliant work – John Coltrane really opening up in his new spiritual mode of the 60s, hinting at the changes to come, while still keeping the modal groove of previous recordings! The record features tracks from a few different sessions from the years 1961 to 1963, but it holds together ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ballads
Impulse, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A perennial favorite in the John Coltrane catalog – a beautiful set of standards, handled in a warm laidback style – but which still has some of the depth of soul that John Coltrane brought to his more experimental work on Impulse Records! The album's a classic introduction to the ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman
Impulse, 1963. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album of vocal jazz – and one of the few sessions that John Coltrane ever cut with a singer! In a way, the album's more Hartman's than it is Coltrane's – given that Johnny's warm, mellow style of singing isn't as free and open as Trane at his most adventurous – but at ... Hank Jones & Oliver Nelson

Happenings
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great little record – very different than anything else that Hank Jones ever recorded! The album features arrangements by Oliver Nelson – done in that mod 60s pop-jazz style that he was using on his best work – and about half the record features Jones playing electric ...
