Reevaluation: The Impulse Years

LP (Item 6949) Impulse/ABC, Mid 60s/1973 — Condition: Very Good
2LP Gatefold

Nice 2LP set of Mingus' work for Impulse, with a fair complement of stuff that he did for the label – including the entire LP's worth of material from Black Saint & The Sinner Lady (which is always his toughest to find). This is a nice cheaply priced way to get that LP, and to get some other goodies like "Hora Decubitus", "Freedom", "II B.S.", and "Theme For Lester Young".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has ring and edge wear.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Solid State, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold
A legendary work – featuring Charles Mingus' great and chaotic Town Hall concert, one of those special events that achieved legendary status before it even started – not just because of the range of great musicians involved, but because the whole set was barely off the ground by the ... Columbia, 1959/1971/1988. Very Good+
80's reissue that brings together tracks from two different Mingus Columbia sessions – one from 1959, and one from 1971. The '71 material is the extended "Shoes of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers", which is one of Mingus' best works from the decade. The other ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Mingus Ah Um
Columbia, 1959. Very Good-
One of Charles Mingus' true classics – and an essential album in any jazz collection! This 1959 gem was recorded by Mingus at a key point in his career – when he was rising from the jazz underground into the ranks of America's elite jazzmen, penning some of the most challenging work of ... Charles Mingus

Mingus Moves
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
Later material by Mingus – and very much an exploration of rootsier styles, with a slight modernist bent. The group's a good assemblage of players who'd become Mingus' most trusted by this point – a smaller ensemble that includes George Adams, Don Pullen, Ronald Hampton, and the always- ... Charles Mingus

Stormy Weather
Candid/Barnaby, Early 60s. Very Good+ 2LP
An excellent 2LP set that combines some of Mingus' best work of the 60s! The set compiles tracks from Mingus albums on the Candid label – and the material features Mingus at his best, working with arch-modern plays, yet still swinging hard and rumbling along with a fantastically heated level ... Blue Thumb/ABC, 1976. Very Good Gatefold
Apart from the title's terrible pun on the Glenn Campbell hit of the mid 70s, this album's a real treat – a very soulful batch of smooth funky jazz tunes by The Crusaders, who by this point have fully emerged to claim the throne of the pop soul jazz genre they virtually invented. The record's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gabor Szabo

Best Of Gabor Szabo
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good Gatefold
A record that's every bit as beautiful and striking as its cover – a cool collection of all the wonderful guitar-driven grooves that guitarist Gabor Szabo created for Impulse Records in the 60s! Szabo first rose to fame working with Chico Hamilton – but soon established himself as one ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse/Analogue Productions, 1962. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful record – but that's no surprise, since most of the later work of Coleman Hawkins tends to be great! The setting is quite laidback – and Hawkins' time-weathered tenor is placed in a perfect setting with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Major Holley on bass, and Eddie Locke on drums. ... Massively groovy work from Chico Hamilton – one of his standout swingers for Impulse Records in the 60s, and a set that really showcases all the changes in music he'd made for the decade! Milt Jackson

Jazz N Samba
Impulse, 1964. Near Mint- Gatefold
This may not be Milt Jackson's purest album – but oh how we love it! Milt's working here more in a Verve pop jazz mode than a highbrow third stream one – with bossa backings on about half the album, and good small combo work on the rest. The first half features Jimmy Heath on tenor, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shirley Scott & Clark Terry

Soul Duo
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A sweet 60s session from the team of Shirley Scott and Clark Terry – musicians who never played together regularly, but who really work wonders on this unique record! Impulse, 1965. Very Good
A tremendous little album from Sonny Rollins – one of his most sharp-edged sessions of the mid 60s, and a bold departure from some of his previous work for RCA!
