Here's Lena Now!

LP (Item 692105) 20th Century, Mid 60s — Condition: Near Mint-

(Cover has some splitting in the top seam.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Think what you want about Lena Horne, the lady's got one of the most distinct voices of her time – and she really sparkled nicely during her years at RCA! Lena Horne

Stormy Weather
RCA, 1957. Very Good
One of Lena Horne's greatest albums of the 50s – a rock-solid effort that takes its name from her famous film appearance of the 40s, but which features some wonderfully sophisticated songs in a very postwar mode! As with other RCA dates of the time, the orchestra's handled by Lena's partner ... LP, Vinyl record album

Joya Sherrill

Joya Sherrill Sings Duke
20th Century, 1965. Very Good+
One of the best recordings we've heard from Joya Sherrill – a set that has her taking on the music of Duke Ellington, but handling things with a cool sort of 60s feel! The arrangements are nice and lean – handled by Mercer Ellington, and featuring players who include Cootie Williams on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mark Murphy

Rah
Riverside, 1961. Sealed
Great early work by Mark Murphy – a set that's different than the cool breeziness of his 70s work, and done with an approach that's a lot hipper than most of his 60s contemporaries! Ernie Wilkins handles the arrangements, and there's a rollicking soul jazz groove here that's a bit unusual ... LP, Vinyl record album

New & Now!
Imperial, Late 60s. Sealed
A beautiful little session from vocalist Sue Raney – and a bit of a departure from her earlier work for Capitol! New Voice In Jazz
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good
Kitty White's first album for Mercury – a sublime set recorded right at the height of Mercury's jazz years – and done in a personal, unfettered style that's really great – right up there with more famous albums for the label by Dinah Washington or Sarah Vaughan from the same time. ... Nabel (Germany), 1984. Near Mint-
Great stuff by the wonderful Monika Linges – a name that will get you in trouble if you say it too fast! The set's got a warmly acoustic glow throughout – an approach that shakes off the keyboards of some of Linges' previous music, but brings in some great acoustic piano lines that ...
