Dial Africa (BYG pressing)

LP (Item 688385) BYG (France), 1958 — Condition: Very Good
French issue of some of Coltrane's groundbreaking recordings for Savoy from the late 50s – recorded in the company of a super-hip sextet with Wilbur Harden on trumpet, and done in a way so that the tracks open up nice and long, in strong modal grooves that point the way towards 'Trane's later work in the 60s. Three long tracks – "Gold Coast", "Dial Africa", and "Oomba".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Non-gatefold pressing.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Jazz Masterworks (Italy), 1962/1963. Very Good+
John Coltrane live – in a setting that really shows the tenorist starting to stretch out a lot – almost hitting some of the freer modes of a few years later, but still keeping things swinging throughout! The rhythm section is superb – that legendary lineup of Jimmy Garrison on ... LP, Vinyl record album

A legendary album from a legendary moment in jazz – and one that's got a very unique lineup, given that the young tenor genius John Coltrane meets up here with the brilliant piano of Cecil Taylor! Bethlehem, 1957. Near Mint-
A nice selection of recordings done by John Coltrane for Bethlehem Records – mostly cut during December of 1957, and issued on the albums The Winner's Circle and Art Blakey Big Band! The music's a bit atypical for Trane, but is more than just a curiosity, with Trane fitting nicely into the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+

John Coltrane

Africa/Brass
Impulse, 1961. Very Good Gatefold
Quite a different album than usual for John Coltrane, but a classic one too – and a set that has the great one exploring his ideas in a set of longer tracks recorded with an expanded jazz orchestra! The format's hardly the mainstream big band of the time – as Coltrane's filled the ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ole
Atlantic, 1961. Sealed
A magnificent record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! As you might guess from the title, there's a slight Latin focus to the record – but not one that has congas and bongos creating choppy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1966. Sealed Gatefold
John Coltrane returns to the Village Vanguard – but his sound here is a lot more far-reaching than a few years before! Soultrane
Prestige, 1958. Very Good
A bold early statement from a young John Coltrane – and an album that really has him expanding his talents as a tenor soloist! Impulse, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
Sublimely spiritual work from the great John Coltrane – a live album, but one that's easily one of his most important contributions to music in the early 60s – and a set that we'd rank right up there with his best studio sides for Impulse or Atlantic Records at the time! The group here ... LP, Vinyl record album
BYG (France), 1969. Near Mint-
An unusual early session from the great pianist Steve Kuhn – recorded in Paris in 1969, but with a much more structured vibe than some of the Actuel sessions at the time!
