Maynard

LP (Item 688083) Columbia, 1981 — Condition: Near Mint-

A set of some the coolest material that the legendary trumpeter Maynard Ferguson cut throughout the 70s – from fiercely energetic, large combo takes on standards, to looser, more simmering styles of timeless jazz, to spacey jazz funk! Not to be confused with Ferguson's similarly titled early 60s set, this Maynard is a compilation of his creatively exploratory 70s years – on records like New Vintage, Live At Jimmy's, Carnival and the Bob James-produced Primal Scream – really showing the breadth of his astonishing range. Great stuff played with large groups and with Maynard at his most diverse. Includes "Airegin", "Stay Loose With Bruce", 'Round Midnight", "The Cheshire Cat Walk", "Chameleon", "Birdland", "Naima", "Got The Spirit" and more.  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cutout hole.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Maynard Ferguson Sextet
Mainstream, Mid 60s. Very Good
A record that will really open your ears to the talents of Maynard Ferguson – especially if you only think of the trumpeter in terms of a big band setting! Straightaway Jazz Themes
Roulette, Early 60s. Very Good+
Forget what you think about Ferguson – this is a very hip album! The tracks are a lot edgier than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

Kind Of Blue
Columbia, 1959. Very Good
What can we say? This is the ultimate Miles Davis album – the one that includes so many songs that we've heard way too much in Starbucks, in retail stores, or at a friend's house who claims to be a "jazz expert", but is really a yuppie dilettante. Yet somehow, over all the years, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Although Paul Winter, like Paul Horn, later went on to do some lousy hippy dippy jazz work that verged on nausea, at the early part of his career, also like Horn, he managed to have a very open minded style that let him sample a number of different influences, and weave them into a colorful ... Don Ellis

Autumn
Columbia, 1968. Near Mint-
An album of explosive power and imagination from Don Ellis – a set that shows him very firmly shaking off the more academic mode of earlier years, and heading into hipper, more youth-oriented directions! Dave Brubeck

Time Changes
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good
One of the most obscure of Brubeck's Columbia modern sessions – and one of the best! Side one features more "time" oriented tunes played with the Quartet that included Paul Desmond, Eugene Wright, and Joe Morello – but side two features the extended "Elementals" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Inside II
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
Paul Horn follows up his Inside The Taj Majal set – in someways leaving behind the stark, spare initimacy of that set for a more layered and tailored approach – and also leaving behind his more pronounced jazz roots for a more earthy and nature themed mode! Like Inside, it's a solo ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shock Treatment
Columbia, 1968. Near Mint-
A great batch of electric-infused big band tracks – and one of the first really funky records from Don Ellis! Ellis was an emerging California trumpeter/composer who'd noodled around with some modern big band work in the mid 60s – but this hip 1968 session has him adding in elements ...
