Sax & Flute Man

LP (Item 6846) Paula, 1973 — Condition: Very Good+

A sweet set of electric funk from James Moody – and a great little record to match the grooves he was laying down at the Perception label in the early 70s – with a very unique sound! Moody's working here alongside some sweet work on electric piano by either Jodie Christian or Tennyson Stephens – and with some sly and soulful arrangements by Chicago soul maestro Richard Evans, who also plays bass on the record and gives it a style that's almost an extension of the later Cadet kind of groove. The album features an excellent funky instrumental version of " First Thing I Do In the Morning", originally a funky vocal 45 by Chicago singer Joyce Williams – and other cuts include "Trilby", "Don't Let Me Be Lonely", "World Is A Ghetto", "Good Sense Humor Man", and "Country City Country".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has a cut corner.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

James Moody

Feelin' It Together
Muse, 1974. Very Good+
James Moody's definitely feelin it here – stepping back into a straighter hardbop mode after some funkier sets of the early 70s – really sounding great on tenor, alto, and flute – and working with a very hip quartet for the date! Kenny Barron's in the group on both electric and ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Moody's Workshop
Prestige, Mid 50s. Near Mint-
A great set from Moody, nice and edgey, with his genius firmly in place! Quincy Jones handled the arrangements, and the group swings in a variety of modes. Moody's on alto and tenor – no flute yet at this point – and highlights include "Workshop", a great number with ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

James Moody (1959)
Argo, 1959. Very Good
Great work from Moody's "second phase" – the post-Overbrook time in which he picks up the flute, drops a bit of the bop style, and starts working in a much more complicated style that showed that he had a hell of a lot of room to grow as an artist! This album's Moody's second for ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Hey It's James Moody
Argo, 1959. Very Good+
A magnificent little album – one of James Moody's first collaborations with arranger Tom McIntosh – one of the most sensitive jazz voices of his time. McIntosh works in a world of many tones and colors – and he really pushes Moody past straighter solo approaches, into a mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Moody

Cookin' The Blues
Argo, 1961. Near Mint-
The genius of Moody! It's an album like this that you need to prove to your friends that Moody was way way more than a simple bopper. The set was recorded live in San Francisco in 1961, and it's got a hip mix of soul jazz, filtered through some modernist ideals, all played by a great little group ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

Heads
Tappan Zee, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold
Heads or tails, it's a winner every time – as the record's one of the last clear moments of genius from keyboardist Bob James in the 70s! The sound here is stepping out a bit more from Bob's earlier sides on CTI, but there's still plenty of great keyboard work to make the album worth seeking ... LP, Vinyl record album

Horace Silver

Blowin' The Blues Away
Blue Note, 1959. Sealed
A killer session from Horace's famous quintet that included Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, Gene Taylor, and Louis Hayes – one of the group's earliest recordings for Blue Note – and also one of their best! The band had a unique mix of rootsy soul jazz playing and more exotic approaches to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Earland

Kharma
Prestige, 1975. Near Mint-
A soaring live set that's definitely overflowing with good kharma – given that Charles Earland is hitting the more spiritual side of his talents here! The group features John Faddis on trumpet, Clifford Adams on trombone, and Dave Hubbard on flute, soprano sax, and tenor – three ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

BJ4
CTI, 1976. Near Mint- Gatefold
The 4th in Bob James legendary run of Fender Rhodes classics for CTI – and a record that still has him working with the dark edges that made the first few so great! As usual with these sets, there's a way of putting over the groove that's really unique – not really funky, but spacious ... LP, Vinyl record album

Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet

Illumination!
Impulse, 1963. Very Good Gatefold
An amazingly unique little group – one that kind of stepped in the Impulse Records back door from the Coltrane galaxy, but which features some very unique aspects overall! As the cover states, the ensemble's led by bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones – and also features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gary McFarland & Gabor Szabo

Simpatico
Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
An amazing collaboration between Gary McFarland and Gabor Szabo – easily one of the grooviest albums either artist recorded in the 60s! The set's heavy on McFarland's great style of arranging – that cool blend of bossa, jazz, and other elements that surfaced strongly on his 60s Verve ... LP, Vinyl record album
