McLean's Scene is a strong one – as the young Jackie is really coming into his own at the time of the session, blowing and growing with a soulful command of the alto sax that would emerge even more strongly in the 60s. The album's got McLean working in a slightly open-ended way – almost a blowing session, but a bit more controlled – yet in that relaxed style that always seemed to get the most sharpness out of Jackie's horn at the time. Other players include Bill Hardman on trumpet, Mal Waldron or Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers or Arthur Phipps on bass, and Art Taylor on drums.
