We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Sun Goddess
Columbia, 1974. Very Good-
One of our favorite Ramsey Lewis albums ever – and a perfect summation of the genius that was brewing on the Chicago scene in the late 60s and early 70s! The album has Ramsey working strongly with Earth Wind & Fire – no surprise, given his close ties to Maurice White, who was the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Highway One
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A wicked post-Blue Note session from Bobby Hutcherson – one that's put together in a different way than his previous work, but still completely sublime throughout! The feel is almost to Hutcherson's earlier work what Woody Shaw's Columbia recordings were to his – tighter, with sharper ... LP, Vinyl record album
In A Silent Way
Columbia, 1969. Very Good-
There's nothing "silent" here – as the album's a bold entry in the electric years of Miles Davis – one that still features contributions from Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Tony Williams – but which also expands the lineup considerably – really reaching out ... LP, Vinyl record album
George Benson Cookbook
Columbia, 1967. Very Good-
A great little record from the days before George Benson had totally hit his smooth jazz sound of the 70s, and was being pushed by Columbia as a hard wailing soul jazz leader! The record features his classic quartet with Lonnie Smith on organ – grooving away hard hard hard, sometimes even ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Early 60s. Very Good
A good collection of work from Miles' early days at Columbia working with Coltrane, up through the pre-Bitches Brew years with the classic Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams lineup. Titles include "Walkin (live)", "All Blues (live)", "Someday My ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Late 60s. Very Good+
Lightly groovy work from the Roy Meriwether trio – sounding especially nice in this live environment – a bit like Ramsey Lewis' group, but with more touches of the style of the Quartette Tres Bien. Tracks are handled in a simple soul jazz mode that's plenty pleasing and very consistent ... LP, Vinyl record album
Inner Mounting Flame
Columbia, 1971. Very Good-
A massive set of fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a group that features some incredible guitar work from John McLaughlin, who sounds even more focused and driven here than on his own records! As with Return To Forever or Weather Report, the combo's a supergroup of sorts – with Billy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Electric Rendezvous
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint-
A sweet electric rendezvous from guitarist Al Di Meola – and a record that stands in sharp contrast to some of the mellower acoustic sessions he was cutting at the time! The album's got a mix of fuzz and funk that's a bit like some of Stanley Clarke's albums for Columbia in the same stretch ... LP, Vinyl record album
Unit Structures
Blue Note, 1966. Very Good+
One of a rare few albums done by pianist Cecil Taylor for the Blue Note label in the 60s – some of the most outside work recorded for the imprint at the time! The word "structures" here is perhaps a bit misplaced – as the work has a strong sense of freedom with the soloists ... LP, Vinyl record album
TCB, Early 60s/Early 70s. Very Good
70's issue of one of the Donald Byrd/Pepper Adams sessions for the Warwick label, from the early 60's. The groove is nice and hard, with a very tight, very in-the-pocket sort of sound. A young Herbie Hancock plays piano, and he lays down solos that are a lot more daring, and with a lot more fire, ... LP, Vinyl record album
