A pair of compilations that really opened up the ears of the north to the sound of Colombia – providing a much-needed showcase for the cumbia grooves that had been burning for decades, but which never saw much release for mainstream markets up in the US! The sets were huge at the time, and have a surprisingly strong array of tracks pulled from the Discos Fuentes catalog – early cumbia gems from the 50s, and tracks from later years that really show the way the instrumentation and production evolved! Titles include "La Colegiala" by Rodolfo Y Su Tipica RA7, "Cumbia Del Monte" by Pedro Laza & Sus Pelayeros, "Cumbia India" by Andres Landero, "Cumbi En Do Menor" by Lito Barrientos, "Ritmo De Tambo" by La Sonora Dinamita, "Amaneciendo" by Adolfo Echeverria Y Su Conjunto, "La Subienda" by Gabriel, Romero, "La Samaria" by Monteria Swing, "Tabaco Mascao" by Combo Los Galleros, "La Piojosa" by La Sonora Cienaguera, "El Pescador De Baru" by Los Warahuaco, and "La Pollera Colora" by Los Immortales.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Luaka Bop, 1991. Used
Ouch! The title almost makes us want to pass this one up – and we certainly wish that Luaka Bop would soft-pedal their politics a bit more, because the music is more than enough to make the compilations sell. The set focuses on Cuban dance music of the 60s and 70s – and provides some ... CD

Excellent CD set that brings together a whole bunch of great Machito sides from the late 40's. This is classic stuff that defined the Latin jazz idiom, and stood as an inspiration to players for years. Funky fusion with plenty of Latin touches – a really compelling set from the Nicaraguan scene of the 70s! The album's got the same criss-crossing of influences you'd hear in some of the best Bay Area projects of this type – no surprise since Jose Chepito Areas is a key member of the ... CD

Mongo Santamaria

Soy Yo
Picante, 1987. Used
Tight 80s Latin from Mongo Santamaria – a set that still has him working with longtime maestro Marty Sheller – in a mix of older Latin modes and a few slightly more modern touches! The group here is somewhat large, but the sound is nice and lean – a groove that's heavy on Mongo's ... CD

Afro Roots (Mongo/ Yambu)
Fantasy, 1958/1959. Used
A nice Prestige 2-fer collecting 2 early sides Mongo cut for Fantasy in the late 50s. The first, released under the title Mongo, is a no-nonsense batch of Latin jazz tracks, arranged by himself and Francisco Aguabella, who's sort of the co-leader of the group on the set! Players include Emil ... CD
