Garland

LP (Item 681897) Storyville, 1982 — Condition: Near Mint-

Indian and European violin styles come together in this unique little album – as both players use acoustic and electric variations of their instrument, and rhythms include a fair bit of Indian instrumentation as well!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bob Brookmeyer & Zoot Sims

Today's Jazz (aka Whooeeee)
Storyville/Jazztone, Mid 50s. Very Good
A wonderful small combo set from this unusual team – put together in ways that are somewhere between the Bob Brookmeyer/Stan Getz pairings of the early 50s, and some of Zoot Sims' work for the Dawn label! Zoot's horn is maybe a bit sharper, and bolder than on his Dawn sides, though – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Harry Sweets Edison & Eddie Lockjaw Davis

Opus Funk Vol. 2
Storyville (Denmark), 1976. Near Mint-
Twin titans coming together wonderfully here – with a depth of soul and tonal vibrancy that may well beat most of their other sessions from the time! Eddie Lockjaw Davis is tremendous right from the start – boldly-blown tenor, with all that raspy edge we've always loved in his style ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Tyler

Definite – Volume 2
Storyville, 1981. Near Mint-
A great early 80s document of free alto great Charles Tyler in a small group with frequent collaborator Earl Cross on trumpet, who though not so well known, played in many important groups both in San Francisco and the early 70s loft scene in NY. Steve Reid, whose name you might recognize from Sun ... LP, Vinyl record album

Al Cohn

Mr Music
RCA, 1954. Near Mint-
A tight little record – with a strong focus on Al Cohn's solo work! Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lonnie Liston Smith

Reflections Of A Golden Dream
Flying Dutchman, 1976. Good+ Gatefold
Lonnie Liston Smith grooves it hard here with his Cosmic Echoes group – mixing in a stronger dose of soul than ever before, yet still giving tracks a righteous feel overall! The approach here is a bit like that of Roy Ayers work from the 70s – still jazzy at its core and conception, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Charles Mingus

Oh Yeah
Atlantic, 1962. Near Mint-
Quite a crazy little record from Charles Mingus! Mingus plays piano and sings (yes, you read that right!) in a tight sextet with Booker Ervin and Roland Kirk on reeds, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone. Mingus is trying out a kind of messed-up, blues-inspired sound here – but for some reason ... LP, Vinyl record album
BYG/Actuel (France), 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
A the time they were taking Paris by storm, the Art Ensemble recorded this brilliant message to folks everywhere – one of their best early albums, and a landmark in Chicago avant garde jazz! The record features the group at their best – playing very tightly, but also with a sense of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Shelly Manne/Jack Sheldon/Irene Kral/Johnny Willia

My Fair Lady – With The Un-Original Cast
Capitol, 1964. Very Good
Way way more than just a simple "jazz meets Broadway" session – as Shelly's working here with vocals by Jack Sheldon & Irene Kral, and arrangements by soundtrack maestro Johnny Williams – in a style that completely recasts the score! The album's got a really dynamic kind ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ted Curson

Blue Piccolo
Why Not (Japan), 1976. Near Mint-
One of the hippest records ever cut by trumpeter Ted Curson – and that's saying a lot, because all his records are pretty darn hip! Curson's working in a quartet with Jim McNeely on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – and the group's a lot tighter than some of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album
