Here's Pearl

LP (Item 680556) Vocalion, 1960s — Condition: Near Mint-

(Black label pressing. Cover has a Simulated Stereo sticker and small cutout hole.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Roulette, 1959. Very Good
A really wonderful take on Porgy & Bess and other Gershwin standards by Pearl Bailey – there's just something about her naturally rich, bluesy, husky tone on these tunes that's simply wonderful! The backing is often well measured, but, occasionally a bigger sound and chorus vocals kick ... LP, Vinyl record album

Pearl Bailey

Sings For Adults Only
Roulette, 1957. Very Good+
Not as "adult" as you might think – at least given the way the word is used today – but pretty great work by Pearl nonetheless! The tunes themselves are a bit "blue" in terms of subject matter – tales of girls with hot pants, loose love, and the kind of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Julie London

Julie Is Her Name
Liberty, Late 50s. Very Good+
A landmark album in 50s vocal jazz – spare, moody, and evocative tunes from Julie London – sung in a stripped-down setting that few other singers would dare at the time! The sound of the set is as sexy as the cover – intimate, personal, and breathily sung in a mode that comes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Singers Unlimited

Try To Remember
MPS, 1972. Near Mint-
Beautiful work by this fab vocal group – featuring a sparkling set of arrangements by leader Gene Puerling! Gloria Lynne

I'm Glad There Is You
Everest, 1960. Very Good
One of Gloria's most jazz-oriented albums – featuring small combo backing from the Earl May trio, with Herman Foster on piano, Grasella Oliphant on drums, and May on bass. Tracks are sweetly done, and titles include "Stella By Starlight", "All Night Long", "Young ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Holiday

Recital By Billie Holiday
Clef, Early 50s. Near Mint-
Not really a recital in the "live" sense, in that the album's a studio session – but a great batch of classic Verve sides by Billie Holiday! The care and quality of the record definitely demonstrate that the Verve years are some of Holiday's best – and for the session, Norman ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kimiko Kasai with Herbie Hancock

Butterfly
Columbia (Japan), 1979. Near Mint-
A legendary pairing of talents – as Japanese jazz singer Kimiko Kasai works alongside Herbie Hancock – in a setting that's very much on the soul side of the spectrum! Both Herbie and Kimiko started out with a straighter jazz sound in their early years – but by the end of the 70s, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Mose Allison

Word From Mose Allison
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint-
The word from Mose is mighty darn hip – served up here in a sweet Atlantic Records session that seems to really hone into all the mod influences his music would have in the 60s! The rootsy quality of Allison's earlier records is still firmly in place – but the group also has a tighter ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, 1955. Very Good+
One of our favorite vocal albums of the 50s – an incredibly witty live set from Noel Coward, recorded in Las Vegas, with a very different style than some of his other records! The Noel Coward you'll hear here is still steeped in the mannered wit of his earlier plays, but he's also let ... LP, Vinyl record album
