It's After The End Of The World

LP (Item 6777) MPS/BASF, 1972 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
One of the key non-Saturn Sun Ra albums of the 70s – and like his records for Blue Thumb and Impulse, a set that really helped awaken the world to his talents! This album may well be one of the most bracing of the bunch – as it features live material recorded by Ra and the Arkestra at two different German jazz festivals in 1970 – performances that really have the group at the height of their righteous power, stretching out with a sound that's even more avant than just a few years before! The reed solos are all quite strong – and include work by Pat Patrick, John Gilmore, Danny Davis, Danny Thompson, and Marshall Allen – plus some other oboe, bass clarinet, and bassoon players too – and the lovely June Tyson provides some righteous words in a few spots, while Ra plays a range of keyboards – from clavinet, to farfisa, Hohner electra, mini-moog, Spacemaster, and rocksichord! Titles include "Black Forest Myth", "Strange Dreams – Strange World – Black Myth", and "Myth Versus Reality (The Myth Science Approach)".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Inner City, 1976. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of Sun Ra's best non-Saturn live sets of the 70s – a nice little record that shows the group mixing it up with equal parts avant garde and straight ahead jazz, all handled in that ever-growing large group style that made them a real force to be reckoned with in a concert setting! The ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS (Germany), 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the wildest albums ever recorded by French tenorist Barney Wilen – a mix of avant jazz and sound effects, set to wax in tribute to Lorenzo Bandini – a famous Italian racer who died tragically during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix! Wilen was an automobile enthusiast in the late 60s, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Rosolino & Conte Candoli

Conversation
MPS (Germany), 1975. Near Mint-
Although Rosolino and Candoli were shining brightest during the late 50s west coast scene, this 1975 MPS session shows that they still could play quite strongly when encouraged! The encouragement here comes from a live crowd at Munich's Domicile, where the set was recorded – and from some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Erwin Lehn

Color In Jazz
MPS (Germany), 1973. Very Good+
One of the all-time classic MPS sessions! Erwin Lehn leads a very tight grooving combo that mixes hard big group arrangements (in the style of the Clarke-Boland or Peter Herbholzheimer groups), with some extremely powerful solos and very inventive arrangements. There's lots of wonderful little ... LP, Vinyl record album

Band (George Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, Daniel Humair, & Others)

Alpine Power Plant – Recorded In Switzerland
MPS (Germany), 1972. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
An excellent MPS big-band session, in a mode that's sort of a mix between the firey hardbop of the Clarke-Boland ensemble, and the more modernist work of George Gruntz. The band is directed by Gruntz – and is co-led by Gruntz, Franco Ambrosetti, Flavio Ambrosetti, and Daniel Humair. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clarke Boland Big Band

All Blues
MPS (Germany), 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent Clarke Boland Big Band LP – very much in the spirit of the group's best work of the era – one that uses the blues of the title merely as springboard for their ebullient big band groove! The album featuring a stellar array of soloists, including Tony Coe on clarinet, Sahib ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jean Luc Ponty & Wolfgang Dauner

Live At The Bern Jazz Festival 2011
MPS (Germany), 2011. Sealed
Two older greats from the MPS label scene of the 70s – coming together here in a later set that shows a wonderful maturation of their talents! Both Jean-Luc Ponty and Wolfgang Dauner had an early talent to stun the ears with great use of electronics – but both musicians are all-acoustic ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1969. Very Good+
Late work by Webster and Byas – playing here with backing by a European rhythm section that includes Tete Montoliu on piano and Peter Trunk on bass, plus American Albert Heath on drums. The tracks are mostly long and open – with the main focus on letting the two tenor giants solo as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Friedrich Gulda

As You Like It
MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
As you like it – and we like it plenty! The album's a stunner from pianist Friedrich Gulda – one that still shows plenty of his high-powered, high-technique roots – but one that also really has him opening up a bit, too – almost bringing in a dose of soul jazz from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar Peterson

Girl Talk
MPS (Germany), Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Mellow magic from Oscar Peterson – recorded for MPS during the mid 60s, but "secret sessions" that didn't get issued until later! The album features Oscar working some incredible wonders on the piano – working with either Sam Jones or Ray Brown on bass and Bob Durham or Louis ... LP, Vinyl record album
MPS, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold
A large group in a small club – the legendary Clarke Boland Big Band, playing at the home turf of one of their key members – tenorist Ronnie Scott! The set features a very legendary performance by the ensemble – a crack lineup that's easily one of the best ever sported by the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann & The Afro-Jazz Sextet + Four Trumpets

Common Ground
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good
A great little record, filled with loads of cross-cultural influences that make for one of the most exotic Herbie Mann albums of the 60s! The group's billed as the Afro-Jazz Sextet– but has a strong Latin vibe as well – a bit of an echo of the experiments Herbie Mann did with Latin ... LP, Vinyl record album
