Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Bill Evans

How My Heart Sings
Riverside, 1962. Very Good-
Magical music from the very first note – the kind of record you need to hear if you've ever doubted the genius of Bill Evans! The sound here is subtle, and supple – but still often more revolutionary than that of the countless albums it inspired in years to come – and Evans is ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Morgan

Sidewinder
Blue Note, 1964. Very Good-
A jazz classic if there ever was one – and the best-selling album ever by Lee Morgan, thanks to the use of the title track in a car commercial! Sure, you've probably heard "The Sidewinder" enough that you think you know the album already – but the rest of the tunes really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Earl Klugh

Late Night Guitar
Blue Note, 1980. Near Mint-
A beautiful set from guitarist Earl Klugh – and one that really lives up to its title – a record that matches Earl's wonderful work on guitar with some sublime orchestral charts from Dave Matthews! The approach is definitely different than some of Klugh's previous work, and makes the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Thad Jones & Mel Lewis

Consummation
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the greatest records ever cut by the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – way way more than a big band jazz session, and a fantastically hip batch of grooves that encompasses a wealth of styles! The Jones/Lewis group could sometimes sound a bit clunky and overhashed – but on this ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stanley Turrentine

Cherry
CTI, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of the best CTI albums from the early 70s – and one of Stanley Turrentine's funkiest records as well! The album's got a sharper edge than most other Turrentine albums of the time – a quality that goes beyond Stan's already soulful approach to the tenor, and which brings in some ... Bobbi Humphrey

Freestyle
Epic, 1978. Sealed
Some of Bobbi Humphrey's greatest work of the post-Blue Note years – an album that's filled with soulful fusion tunes throughout, all with a great focus on her funky flute! Albert Ayler

Bells
ESP, 1965. Sealed
A seminal live set by a young Albert Ayler – an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Quartette Tres Bien

Spring Into Spring
Decca, Mid 60s. Sealed
An obscure one from the Quartette Tres Bien – one of their first new albums for the Decca label, and a lyrically beautiful set of piano and percussion tracks with a heck of a lot of soul! The approach is similar to that used on many of the group's other ones from the time – piano trio ... LP, Vinyl record album
Contemporary, 1960. Near Mint-
Classic hardbop from the west coast – a set of live recordings done at the Black Hawk jazz club in San Francisco at the end of the 50s, featuring Shelly Manne at the head of a group that includes the great Joe Gordon on trumpet! Tracks are longer, livelier, and have a lot more solo room and ... LP, Vinyl record album

New Birth

Blind Baby
Buddah, 1975. Sealed
A classic album by this righteous soul collective – and one that shows them taking a strong step away from their work at RCA with Harvey Fuqua.
