Happy Music – The Best Of The Blackbyrds

CD (Item 675960) Fantasy, 1970s — Condition: Used
$4.99 ...

Sublime funk by one of the greatest combos of the 70s – the mighty mighty Blackbyrds, a group who first came to prominence under the guidance of Donald Byrd, but quickly showed they had plenty to offer on their own! Back in the day, the sound of The Blackbyrds was really the sound of Fantasy Records – a newly sophisticated approach to jazz funk, helped out by Byrd and the Mizell Brothers – and fused into a groove that was hip, tight, but never too slick or smooth. The balance of instrumentation here is really amazing – sharp-edged playing like the best indie funk, but brought up to a level of perfection in the studio to match the advances going on at CTI, Kudu, or Blue Note. The collection does a great job of mixing the group's classics with some under-appreciated album gems – and it also features the previously unreleased tune "Feel Like A Kid" – alongside other numbers that include "Rock Creek Park", "Unfinished Business", "Do It Fluid", "One Eye Two Step", "Supernatural Feeling", "Walking In Rhythm", "Mysterious Vibes", "Enter In", "Gut Level", "Reggins", "Blackbyrds Theme", and "Hot Day Today".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

A great little set from Sylvester – 3 sides recorded live in San Francisco, one more recorded in the studio! All the sides have a complicated approach to the groove – larger orchestrations that really show Syl pushing his conception of soul to the max, sounding really wonderful, and ... CD

Kelly Brothers

Sanctified Southern Soul
Excello, Late 60s. Used
Beautiful late 60's southern soul by one of the best (and rarest) groups of the genre. The amazing trio of the Kelly Brothers recorded these tracks for the Excello label between 1966 and 1968, and although some of them were compiled on an album by the group, that album's been tremendously hard to ... The O'Jays keep on going strong – hitting a smooth mellow Philly vibe that takes them away from the style of their mid 70s hits! The sound here is a bit more uptempo than on the previous album So Full Off Love – but the group are still also really using the time to explore their ... CD

A nice set of funky soul tracks by the great Syl Johnson – and believe it or not, one that has a different listing than some of the other CDs of his Twilight/Twinight work that we've carried! Apparently, some of this stuff's from singles, and it features nice tracks that weren't on the LPs. ... CD

A mega-hit, but for good reason – as the record brought sophistication back to chart soul at the end of the 80s – proof that well-done, deeply-voiced records could still beat the schmaltz of the geri-curl generation! Anita's working here in territory that draws from the classics, but ... CD
