Too Hip To Be Happy

LP (Item 669410) Valley Vue, 1988 — Condition: Near Mint-

Titles include "I Saw It Coming", "Dip My Dipper", "School Of Life", "She's Cheatin On You", "I've Got To Use My Imagination", and "Don't Throw Your Love On Me So Strong".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Albert King

I Wanna Get Funky
Stax, 1973. Very Good+
Albert King hardly has to make the statement in the title – as the record's plenty funky throughout, and has that great mix of blues with hipper 70s styles that you'd find in his best material for Stax Records! King's at the core, both on vocals and guitar – but the set also features ... LP, Vinyl record album

Clifton Chenier

Bayou Blues
Specialty, Late 50s. Near Mint-
Early work by Clifton Chenier – clearly in the cajun music mode, but with distinct R&B touches. Clifton's playing plenty of heavy accordion tunes on the set – and tracks include "Zydeco Stomp", "Boppin The Rock", "Clifton's Squeeze Box Boogie", "Th ... LP, Vinyl record album
Checker, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Man, with a square guitar and a badass style of presentation, it's hard to imagine how Bo could manage to NOT be in the spotlight! The album, like all his early Chess sides, is a real cut above the usual R&B set – with all original tracks, a really self-contained approach, and a no-nonsen ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco, 1972. Near Mint-
70s blues from Louisiana Red, but cut with a rough-edged style that reminds us a fair bit of mid 50s Chess Records work from Chicago! The style's a nice back-to-basics one that helps Red avoid the growing cliches dragging down blues at the time – and the production keeps things lean, mean, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Risky Blues
King, Early 50s. Very Good+
Not really "risky", but "risque" – someone must have spelled the title wrong! Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Chess, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Some of the earliest blues ever recorded by the legendary Chess Records – material by a variety of artists caught at the very start of the 50s! Gil Scott-Heron's first album – and his angriest! Rotary Connection

Aladdin
Cadet, 1974. Very Good Gatefold
Heavenly mystical soul from Rotary Connection! If you know the group, you know the deal already: Minnie Riperton sings vocals on a number of cuts, and the great Charles Stepney's producing and arranging, with a super-baroque style that's still light years ahead of most producers in pop!
