At risk of overselling the thing, we're going to go ahead and make a proclamation. (It's 100% true to our ears, so screw it!) We honestly can't think of a more consistently great series of releases in the rock-ish realm from one act, in a two year period, than Califone has produced between 2002 and 2004, lest we go all the way back to what Dylan did between '65 and '67. We've admired Califone since the great great Red Red Meat broke up, but with last year's Quicksand/Cradlesnakes and now Heron King Blues, they've really found a tuneful groove that previous records and live shows only hinted at. Tim Rutili and company's purely unique mix of spare, rural acoustic string-plucking, broken/fragmented organ and piano, hoarse and somewhat cryptic vocals from Rutili, and whispy tape loop effects are pretty much incomparable (and soon to ripped off by hundreds of followers, if that's not happening already.) If you're unfamiliar, Califone's pretty tough to describe, but if you dig early 70s Neil Young at his most stripped-down, and the experimental/tape-manipulating guise John Fahey wore for some of the better Takoma LPs, than you really can't go wrong here. The fact that this thing was written and recorded in only a couple of weeks seems like a small miracle. "Wingbone", "Trick Bird", "Sawtooth Sung A Cheater's Song", "Apple", "Lion & Bee", "2 Sisters Drunk On Each Other" and more.  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Thrill Jockey, 2000. Used
Maybe the warmest record by the Sea & Cake – drawing a lot more from their earlier The Biz and Sam Prekop's solo album than their previous The Fawn, adding strings to a lot of the melodies instead of the electronic sounds. Sunny avant pop that manages to pull off a little bit of ... CD

One Bedroom
Thrill Jockey, 2003. Used
The boys turn the whimsy back up a notch for their sweetly synth-soaked latest effort, and Prekop's voice has never been so confident and out front. The tunes seem longer and have a more languorous feel than their last couple records, but the hooks are just as sweet. It took a long while to come ... CD
