CD

Great stuff from one of those groups who just keep on grooving over the years – always hitting hard with their own unique take on deep funk! We first loved Soulive back when the group were issuing music on self-produced CDs – and they've really come a long way in their sound, and have learned a lot about their instruments in the process. Things here are super-tight, but never overly-jamming – and if anything, it almost feels like the group have stepped back a bit towards their roots, yet with all the prowess picked up over the years. Alan Evans brings some mighty drums to the group, and also sings just a bit – Eric Krasno plays guitar, and Neal Evans handles both organ, bass keys, and clavinet. Nigel Hall sings guest vocals on two tracks, and the Shady Horns blow a bit too – and titles include "Up Right", "The Swamp", "Too Much", "PJs", "Tonight", "Prototype", and "For Granted". Also includes a bonus DVD – featuring the group live at the Blue Note, in Tokyo!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible. All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

With our Used CDs, you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks — clean, and not dirty at all. You can also expect the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves — putting fresh cases on Used CDs we handle) — and you can expect the booklet to be in good shape, unless noted otherwise. We will list any specific details/defects underneath the item — so look for notes on cutout marks in the case, stamps on the barcode, or details like that.

Doin' Something
Blue Note, 2001. Used
Great stuff from one of the funkiest combos around! Soulive are part of the second wave of US jam-band funk acts – the sort of groovy groups that have been springing up in the wake of Medeski, Martin, & Wood's success over the past 10 years – and the combo's got a tight no-nonsense ... CD

Cochemea

All My Relations
Daptone, 2019. Used
You might know Cochemea Gastelum from his work in The Dap-Kings over the years – but this time around, the saxophonist is very much his own man – blowing a version of his instruments that often seems electrified, ala classic Varitone from the late 60s – used in these really new ... CD

Karl Hector & The Malcouns

Non Ex Orbis
Now Again, 2019. Used
Some of the fullest, freakiest sounds we've ever heard from Karl Hector & The Malcouns – and a set that almost has the contemporary combo resonating with some of the older psych and fuzz that often gets reissued on the Now Again label! JJ Whitefield – of Whitefield Brothers/Poets ... CD
Legere (France), 2017. Used
A great introduction to the voice of Gabriel Tajeu – a singer who has this way of grabbing us right from the very first note, with a vibe that's classic enough to have made him huge way back in the 70s! Gabriel's music has a sound that's as sunny as the image on the cover – a style ... CD

Urban/Polydor (Japan), 1989. Used
Wonderful early work from the great James Taylor Quartet – a killer UK group that emerged out of the London mod and acid jazz scenes of the 80s, then went onto become a monstrously talented funk group in their own right! Taylor's smoking Hammond leads the session, stepping out in some strong ... CD

Galactic

Coolin' Off
Fog City/Volcano, 1996. Used
Choppy New Orleans styled funk in the tradition of the Meters, and recorded with a lot of fidelity to the original sound. Not as amazing as the original, natch, but still surprisingly funky with a good earthy sound to it. Tracks include "Go Go", "Everybody Wants Some (parts 1-3)&quo ... CD

Ike Quebec

Blue & Sentimental
Blue Note, 1961. Used
Moody late night tenor musings by one of Blue Note's greatest talents of the early 60s! The album's a classic through and through – and the tenor of the mighty Ike Quebec is set up nicely in a solid quartet with Grant Green on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. ...
