Givin' It Back

LP (Item 6644) T Neck, 1971 — Condition: Very Good+
Gatefold
A very weird, but very beautiful album by the Isleys – one in which they move into a folksy rock groove, and play acoustic guitars in long spiralling soulful versions of some of their favorite rock hits! The sound's a bit like Terry Callier or Bill Withers, but it's also still got that sexy Isley groove to it – and although the cuts aren't all out funky, there's definitely a lot of funk in the way that they're set up! We love the complexity of the Isleys at this point – really willing to take a chance like this, with results that come out beautifully. Titles include a great version of "Love The One You're With", plus "Machine Gun", "Ohio", "Spill The Wine", and "Lay Lady Lay".  © 1996-2025, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing. Cover has ring wear.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Condition Notes

If something is relevant, we try to describe it in the notes — especially if it is release or pressing details, or an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

T Neck, Late 70s. Very Good
Here's the side of 70s Isleys that we like the best – the mellow side! This tasty little collection features some hits by the group, but the best part about it is that it's got a focus on some of the more soulful ballads and laidback material, with less of the harder funky stuff. Tunes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

Isleys Live
T Neck, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
One of the hippest 70s albums by the Isley Brothers – a set that has them playing live with a stripped-down group, in a manner that's similar to other live albums of the time by Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and Bill Withers. The format is great, and really gets to the core of the Isley's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Isley Brothers

3 + 3
T Neck, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing little album from the Isley Brothers – one in which the group manage to explore their growing love of the electric guitar, yet somehow sound even more soulful than before! The music is slinky and seductive, with a wonderful style that's never too overly funky – just laidback ... LP, Vinyl record album
T Neck, 1985. Near Mint-
A sweet little collection of work by this seminal 70s vocal group. The set is issued on Tneck, but it features many tunes from the group's earlier London recordings. Titles include "Natural High", "That's Now How It Goes", "Traffic Cop", "Outside Woman", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

Lifeline
Polydor, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was ... LP, Vinyl record album

TS Monk

House Of Music
Mirage/Atlantic, 1980. Very Good+
Livin' the "Bon Bon Vie", with this classic uptempo groover from T.S. Monk! You'd hardly guess that this guy was Thelonious Monk's son – but who cares about his roots when the album grooves so hard? This Monk plays drums, not piano, but the best tracks on the record have a tight ... LP, Vinyl record album
Westbound, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A massive double length set from Funkadelic! As if the group's vision wasn't already expansive enough in their early Westbound years, they really make incredible use of the space of this 2LP set to show off their talent for funky invention, fuzzed-out guitar, and mind-bending look at the world ... LP, Vinyl record album

Temptations

1990
Gordy, 1973. Very Good
One of the last totally righteous albums by the Temptations – recorded at the end of their progressive run at Motown, and done with some really hard-hitting tunes and production from Norman Whitfield! Tracks step off with that beautiful mix of badass soul, heavy production, and soaring ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chi Sound, 1977. Very Good+
It's an unfortunate fact that within a few years of stating the reincarnation-oriented title of this record, Walter would sadly have passed away, making the issue of "coming back as a song" even more pertinent. This record's one of his best of the Chisound years – and features a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Charles

Genius + Soul = Jazz
Impulse, 1960. Very Good+ Gatefold
A wonderful chapter in the career of Ray Charles – and a key album in helping raise his respect level a notch or two in the early 60s! We might argue with the mathematics in the title – or at least joke that Ray was using equations as titles years before Anthony Braxton – but you ... LP, Vinyl record album

Maze

Maze
Capitol, 1977. Very Good+
An amazing debut album from Frankie Beverly and Maze – as perfect as the group would ever sound, with an impeccable approach to both funk and ballads that put them at the top of the stack immediately! Of course, Frankie had been knocking around in indie soul obscurity for a number of years ... LP, Vinyl record album
Columbia, Mid 70s. Very Good Gatefold
Fantastic stuff through and through – and almost a "best of" best of collection from the 70s! The album's a key illustration of the genius of Earth Wind & Fire on Columbia Records – because by the time the set was released in 1978, most of the tracks were already well-know ...
