Tommy Flanagan — Beyond The Blue Bird – Another ... CD 16.99
Really special magic from pianist Tommy Flanagan – exactly the of record that shows why his approach to the piano can be so great – this wonderful balance of fuller rhythms and lighter lyrical moments – given some equal spin here by guitarist Kenny Burrell, whose work in the quartet is every bit as great as Tommy's! There's a nicely understated vibe to the record – but just because the players make things seem so effortless – such a command of their instruments the moments of beauty just keep coming at a level that's breathtaking once you stop to think about the way they're spinning things out! The group also features George Mraz on bass and Lewis Nash on drums – the last of whom is perfect here – and titles include "Bluebird", "Yesterdays", "Blues In My Heart", "Barbados", "The Con Man", and "Bluebird After Dark".  © 1996-2022, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

Tommy Flanagan

Enja (Germany), 1982. Used
There's a definite Monkish bent to this one, in case you couldn't guess from the title – but Tommy Flanagan doesn't simply copy Monk's compositions, but also throws in a few great touches of his own! The session's got a depth and complexity that goes beyond other standard tributes to ... CD

Prestige/Moodsville/OJC, 1960. Used
Mellow work from Tommy Flanagan – working here in great trio formation with Roy Haynes on drums and Tommy Potter on bass! The overall feel of the set's in keeping with the more laidback style of Prestige's Moodsville label, and Tommy tickles the ivories nicely on some standards that include ... CD

Tommy Flanagan

Jazz Poet
Timeless (Netherlands), 1989. Used
A great title for this one – given the extremely poetic sound of Tommy Flanagan on the piano! For years, Tommy's had a great talent for being as bopper, yet as sensitive as a mellower, more lyrical player too – a brilliant combination that shows up instantly in the first few notes of ... CD

Tommy Flanagan

Alone Too Long
Denon (Japan), 1977. Used
Warm and lyrical solo piano work from Tommy Flanagan – a Japanese only session from the mid 70s, and one of the first of a long run of well-produced dates that Flanagan would do for that market! The format's even more intimate than the relaxed setting of some of Tommy's American dates of the ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1985. Used
The title's no lie, but it can't even begin to get at the very special sound of the record – as there's a lot more going on here than just a saxophonist taking on American standards! Harry Verbeke's got this sense of tone and phrasing that are very much his own – a quality that we love ... CD

Gary Bartz

Timeless (Netherlands), 1991. Used
The 90s were a really wonderful decade for reedman Gary Bartz – a time when he seemed to go back to basics, and find a way to open up whole new corners in his music! This album's a key illustration of that moment – as Bartz blows with a sense of darkly brooding power that we never ... CD

Louis Hayes/Junior Cook with Woody Shaw

Timeless/Solid (Japan), 1976. Used
A real gem from Woody Shaw's greatest period – a very hip sextet session, recorded with Hayes, Cook, Shaw, and a rhythm section that includes Ronnie Matthews on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Guilhermo Franco on percussion. Tracks are long, and stretch out in that searching, modal style ... CD

Doin' It Again
Timeless (Germany), 1980. Used
An excellent set from reedman Dave Liebman – easily one of his most soulful from the 70s, thanks to some key currents in the group! John Scofield is on the session – playing guitar, but sometimes with this phrasing that almost feels more like a keyboard – especially in the way it ... CD

Ellington Ballads
Timeless (Holland), 1988. Used
A nice little record that's very much along the lines of the duet sessions that pianist Horace Parlan cut with Archie Shepp – done with a similar open, soulful style that really brings a lot of personal energy to these tunes penned by Duke Ellington! This might be the first time we've ever ... CD
