LP, Vinyl record album

We remember when we first came across this loss leader collection in cutout bins everywhere, way back when we were first getting into free jazz, and got really excited. While most of these tracks are available elsewhere, it's a nice overview of the scene Impulse did a pretty good job documenting. 11 tracks: Gato Barbieri "Para Nosotros", Michael White "Preytude", John Coltrane "Cosmos", Alber Ayler "Change Has Come", Archie Shepp "Basheer", John Klemmer "tree Of Forbidden Fruit", Marion Brown "Tokolokoloka", Sam Rivers 'Suite For Molde", Pharoah Sanders "Red Black & Green", Sun Ra "The Cosmo Fire" and Dewey Redman "Innerconnection". (Cover has a cutout hole and some seam splitting.)  © 1996-2018, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Impulse, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold
A great little record – very different than anything else that Hank Jones ever recorded! The album features arrangements by Oliver Nelson – done in that mod 60s pop-jazz style that he was using on his best work – and about half the record features Jones playing electric ... LP, Vinyl record album
That's The Way It Is
Impulse, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold
At the end of the 60s, Milt Jackson and Ray Brown cut some very groovy records together – teamed up in a great pairing of styles that pushed both of them way past the more standard sounds of earlier years! Americans In Europe Vol 2
Impulse, 1963. Near Mint- Gatefold
If you read these pages often enough, you'll know that we're big fans of recordings made by American expatriot players while living in Europe during the 60's. The European rhythm sections often bring out new elements of their playing, and the interaction with European soloists hits modes that we ... LP, Vinyl record album
College Concert Of Pee Wee Russell & Red Allen
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Trad revival material – but like most of Pee Wee's sides from the time, a lot hipper than you might expect, with traces of modernism that show why Russell was getting the ears of a lot of the jazz elite at the time, and why these mid 60s recordings are well worth seeking out. The group ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold
Excellent work from the glory days of Impulse Records – tracks from sessions for the label's most famous albums, but never issued until this special package! Blues For We
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
A record that's a lot more jazz than you'd guess from the title – a seminal set from the mighty Mel Brown! The "blues" here are hardly the familiar kind – and instead, the album really stresses the more soul-based sound of Mel Brown's work – thanks to some very groovy ... LP, Vinyl record album
Proof Positive
Impulse, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold
Positive proof that JJ Johnson's one of the greatest trombone players ever – a sublime quartet session for Impulse Records, and one that features some of his most striking, stripped-down work of the 60s! The focus here is really on Johnson's amazing tone and timing – but the record ... LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, 1965. Good+ Gatefold
A very unusual album for Yusef Lateef – and that's saying quite a lot, given how quirky most of his work can be! The session has Lateef exploring both rootsy and modern modes – working in a unique quartet that features George Arvanitas on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and legendary ... LP, Vinyl record album
Best Of Chico Hamilton
Impulse, 1960s. Very Good+ Gatefold
A collection of a number of sides Chico cut for the Impulse label throughout the 60s, many of which are among our favorites! The grooves here are a wonderful assortment of mad choppy numbers – with plenty of modal touches, nice exotic solos, and some of the most unusual conceptions of a ... LP, Vinyl record album
ABC/Impulse, 1964. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
Some of the most amazing work that Yusef Lateef ever recorded! All tracks were recorded on June 26, 1964 – at Pep's Lounge in Philly, and the group's a hard-wailing batch of soulful players that are one of the tightest that Lateef ever worked with! The 2LP set features Lateef's incredible ... LP, Vinyl record album
Blue Note, 1969. Near Mint-
Late work by tenor giant Hank Mobley – and a really unique session that stands out from his other Blue Note work of the time! Bitches Brew
Columbia, 1969. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ...
