Milt Jackson — Vibrations ... CD 18.99
Excellent work as a leader from vibist Milt Jackson – very different than his Atlantic recordings with the Modern Jazz Quartet! This set has Milt working in a few different settings – including a great larger group with Tommy Flanagan on piano, Jimmy Heath on tenor, and Tate Houston on baritone – all arranged by Tom McIntosh, who also plays trombone on the tunes! A few more feature a small group with Flanagan on piano and Kenny Burrell on guitar – and titles include "With Malice Towards None", "Darbin The Red Fox", "Sweet Georgia Brown", "Algo Bueno", "Vibrations", and "Let Me Hear The Blues".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(White label mono pressing! Cover has one bumped corner, but is nice overall.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Atlantic, 1959. Very Good+
A beautiful setting for the vibes of Milt Jackson – a record that has his sublime chromatic sound stepping out in front of fuller orchestrations from Quincy Jones – never overdone, but with just the right sort of soulful focus to send Milt over the top! The album's an early example of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson

Memphis Jackson
Impulse, 1970. Very Good Gatefold
One of the grooviest albums ever from the legendary Milt Jackson – an upbeat, almost funky set of soul jazz tracks – played with some great grooves on the bottom! Those trademark Jackson vibes are firmly in place, but the setting is quite different from the staid sounds of the MJQ ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ornette Coleman

Free Jazz
Atlantic, 1961. Near Mint- Gatefold
The title gets it right – as the album's easily the closest thing to free jazz that Ornette Coleman ever recorded – an album-length improvisation played by a "double quartet" that's overflowing with classic players! The style here is a fair bit like John Coltrane's Ascension ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Brubeck with Gerry Mulligan

Last Set At Newport
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
A rare meeting of 2 modern talents from the 50s – joined together in one unique performance from the Newport Jazz Festival in 1971! The baritone sax of Gerry Mulligan's a nice contrast to the usual Brubeck alto of Paul Desmond – long-departed from Dave's combo by this time, but ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Blacknuss
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
One of the best-remembered albums from the Atlantic Records run of the legendary Rahsaan Roland Kirk – a set that stands as Kirk's answer to all the hipper soul currents that were taking place at the time – including some that were being issued by singers on Atlantic Records! The album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gil Evans

Svengali
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint-
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1974. Near Mint-
A beautiful little record from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – and although performed for a bigger label than some of their previous indie outings, the set may be one of the most dynamic the group ever recorded! Atlantic Records is clearly giving the group a lot of space here – as they're ... LP, Vinyl record album

Rahsaan Roland Kirk

Bright Moments
Atlantic, 1973. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
Great double album live set with Roland leading a tight group through a long and varied set of material, all of which showcases the odd goofy sound of his music, and his offbeat approach to more familiar tracks. He talks a bit, makes the odd joke about being blind, and never ceases to amaze with ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atlantic, 1976. Near Mint-
Eddie continues the funky groove begun on Instant Funk, and smoothed out over albums like I Need Some Money – and although jazz fans probably gave him hell for going this way, we think this is actually a pretty darn great album! The record takes all of Eddie's experimentation with groovy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Yusef Lateef

10 Years Hence
Atlantic, 1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Tracked live in San Francisco, some numbers were later augmented with overdubbed strings and vocals – there's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet

Blues On Bach
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good+
Titles include "Regret", "Precious Joy", "Blues In H", "Blues In C Minor", "Rise Up In The Morning", and "Blues In B Flat". LP, Vinyl record album

John Coltrane

Ole
Atlantic, 1961. Near Mint-
A magnificent record from John Coltrane – one of his earliest expressions of unbridled spirituality, and a session that we've treasured for years! As you might guess from the title, there's a slight Latin focus to the record – but not one that has congas and bongos creating choppy ... LP, Vinyl record album
