Sounds Of Yusef

LP (Item 65928) Prestige, 1957 — Condition: Very Good+

A beautifully haunting set by Yusef that marked his move to Prestige, and a sophistication of the Eastern-tinged jazz style that he developed during his years with Savoy. The tracks on here feature Yusef playing tenor, flute, and argol – with backing by a group of Detroit musicians that includes Hugh Lawson, Wilbur Harden, and Oliver Jackson, all frequent bandmates of Lateef. The tracks have a beautiful quality to them that mixes soulful jazz playing with Eastern approaches to arrangements, and they're unlike anything else we could describe (except, perhaps, some of Lateef's other LPs from the time!). Titles include "Meditation", "Love & Humor", and "Buckingham".  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Blue label pressing. Cover has a cutout hole and a name in marker.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

A spacious mid 70s set from Yusef Lateef – with some numbers showing his more soaringly spiritual bent – and others hewing towards a more bluesy or loosely funky vein. Atlantic, 1970. Near Mint-
One of the best of Yusef's Atlantic recordings, and one that offers a mix of his 2 different sides – his older spiritualist one, and his newer funkier one. Includes the tight groover "Live Humble", with nice conga work by Ray Barretto, plus the extended "Chandra" and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hush 'N' Thunder
Atlantic, 1973. Sealed
A moody set of 70s work from Yusef – proof that he was always trying to push his bag, and a good attempt to bridge his earlier exotic work and his later high concept compositions. Some of this material is spare and thoughtful, while other tracks are trying for sort of a 70's electric funk ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1965. Very Good
Brother Jack's organ is set amidst an amazing batch of orchestrations by Benny Golson, and the core of the group is Jack's combo with Red Hollway, George Benson, and Joe Dukes.
