Fire It Up

LP, Vinyl record album

Rick James fires it up at the end of the 70s – stepping out at full star power that has him rivaling the strength of Bootsy Collins at Warner, and paving the way for the rise of Prince in the early 80s! As with Prince, James' version of funk here is a bit offbeat – lots of riffing guitars in the mix, and a bad-strutting groove that's still conventional mainstream funk of the time, yet with some edgier elements that led Rick to label his music as "punk funk" (or was it "funk punk"?) Given the end-of-70s spirit, you might also say that some of the cuts were aimed at the dancefloor – although James was never really one to storm the discos as much as others. Titles include "Love Gun", "Fire It Up", "Come Into My Life", "Lovin You Is A Pleasure", and "Stormy Love". (Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has wear.)  © 1996-2017, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gordy, 1979. Very Good+
Think what you might about Rick James, this is actually a pretty darn funky album – with lots of tight bass-heavy grooves! Rick's working here with the Stone City Band, in a style that's leaner and less commercial than some of his later work – going for a mainstream funk approach, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Just We Two
Gordy, 1969. Very Good
A rare gem from Edwin Starr – quite different than any of his other work for Motown, and a sweet soul album that's been a favorite of ours for years! Although Edwin's always best known for the hard soul of hits like "War" or "25 Miles", this record takes off in a whole ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gordy, 1973. Very Good
One of the later Norman Whitfield efforts for The Temptations – a masterpiece of baroque harmony soul, touched with bits of the righteous sound that Whitfield brought to the group a few years before. Don't Look Any Further
Gordy, 1984. Very Good+
The Temptations' former lead singer's first solo record with a huge 80s groove album, especially considering the mighty title track – the duet with Siedah Garrett and it's sly reggae influenced bassline and crisp popping beat. This is one of those records we appreciate a lot more with the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wish It Would Rain
Gordy, 1968. Very Good-
A pivotal moment for The Temptations – a set that has the group hitting even more of a deep soul sound than before – at a level that really sets them apart from some of the other groups on Motown at the time! Casanova
Collectables, 1967/Mid 80s. Very Good+ (reissue)
Great reissue of this excellent bit of Chicago female soul, performed by the great Ruby Andrews, and with arrangements by some of the best local talents in the city. Ruby sang with a voice that was pure deep soul, but she had arrangements that were in the best Chicago tradition of the time. The ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gordy, 1978. Very Good-
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a strident uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gordy, 1978. Very Good+
A really nice little record from High Inergy – one that sounds a lot better than we remember from some of the girls' other sets! There's almost a bit of a softening going on here – less "inergy" in the grooves, and more of a warm approach to soul that still works in the ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Bill Withers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that has hip stepping off the acoustic sound of his Sussex records, into a warm and jazzy style that we like every bit as much as his earlier work! Imaginations
20th Century, Mid 70s. Sealed
An excellent group soul from Chicago – and no wonder, since The Imaginations were previously Brighter Side Of Darknes, a sublime falsetto harmony group who had a huge hit in 1972 with "Love Jones". This record's very much in the vein of that song – but also features a ... LP, Vinyl record album
