From The Heart

LP (Item 65366) Chiaroscuro, 1971 — Condition: Sealed

Solo piano work by Mary Lou – not as funky as some of her other sides from the time, but with a nice degree of soulful exploration that makes the work resonate a bit more strongly than some of her other solo recordings. Titles include "For The Figs", "Gemma", "Marnier Mood", "Blues For John", "Night Life", and "Cloudy".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim)

Black Lightning
Chiaroscuro, 1976. Very Good+
An album that was issued in the US, but which actually features excellent work that Abdullah Ibrahim/Dollar Brand recorded for the Gallo label in South Africa – the kind of edgier work that we often prefer next to some of his solo and trio material! The key force here is the horns – as ... LP, Vinyl record album

Leo Wright

Blues Shout
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good+
A beautiful record, and one of the few albums ever cut as a leader by alto player Leo Wright! At the time of the set, Wright was really making some excellent records with Lalo Schifrin and in Dizzy Gillespie's group (where they both were working at the time) – and this set is a perfect ... George Benson

It's Uptown
Columbia, 1967. Very Good+
George Benson's first LP for Columbia – a hard, heavy, soul jazz slammer that bears no resemblance to his overproduced work of the 70s! The album's a real cooker – recorded hot on the heels of Benson's classic work on Prestige with the Jack McDuff group, and sounding a lot like McDuff's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Milt Jackson & The Monty Alexander Trio

Soul Fusion
Pablo, 1977. Very Good+ Gatefold
Milt Jackson joins the Monty Alexander Trio – bringing a new level of sound to the group that had already been winning our hearts with their 70s work on MPS! The style here is easygoing and soulful – that flowing Alexander groove that reached its zenith in the 70s – and Milt ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1966. Very Good+ Gatefold
The Marquis De Sade never sounded so sweet! For some strange reason, Schifrin decided to pay a musical hommage to De Sade with this one – but fortunately, he's not punishing himself with the subject matter at all, and is sticking to his jazzy bossa guns. The arrangements have a tight Verve ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCS, Late 60s. Very Good+
A beautiful album from this obscure tenorist – a player with this rich, mouthy tone that's perfect for the laidback, open-ended tunes on this set – done with just help from piano and bass! The tunes are dominated by Corky's great tone and phrasing – and titles include "Ah ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wonderful work from tenorist Warne Marsh – a player we almost like more in these later years than we do during the famous 50s recordings that brought him to everyone's attention!
