Mark Murphy Sings

LP (Item 6502) Muse, 1975 — Condition: Very Good+
Arguably the best Mark Murphy album ever – a stunningly soulful, and slightly spiritual 70s session that features some of his hippest tunes ever – and backings from a Dave Matthews-arranged group that also includes The Brecker Brothers and Don Grolnick on keyboards! Titles include great vocal versions of "Naima", "Empty Faces", "Red Clay", "Maiden Voyage", and "Canteloupe Island".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Riverside, 1962. Very Good+
Given what a freewheeling, open-minded, and lyrical jazz singer Mark Murphy is, it's hard to imagine him really loving "the blues" – and fortunately, most of that love is extended in the title, because the album itself is less of the blues effort that you might think. True, the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Decca, Mid 50s. Very Good+
Pretty darn cool stuff from one of the greatest jazz singers around! This one was Mark's first album, cut a long time ago when he was a wee lad – as you'll see by the photo on the cover. The arrangements are by Ralph Burns, and they're pretty darn hip – and although the style is more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta Jones

I'll Be Seeing You
Muse, 1988. Near Mint-
Accompanied by Houston Persoon on tenor, George Devens on vibraphone, Stan Hope on piano, Milt Hinton on bass, Vernell Fournier on drums, and Ralph Dorsey on percussion. LP, Vinyl record album

Michele Hendricks

Carryin On
Muse, 1987. Very Good+
A solo set from Michele Hendricks – possibly best known for her work with Hendricks & Co, a vocal group with her famous father Jon – but still sounding pretty great here on her own! The set's a simple, soulful outing – one that has Hendricks singing in some deep-toned vocals ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta Jones

Sugar
Muse, 1990. Near Mint-
(Cover has light wear.) LP, Vinyl record album

Abbe Lane with Tito Puente

Be Mine Tonight
RCA, 1959. Near Mint-
Classic 50s work from vocalist Abbe Lane – and a record that's made all the better by some great arrangements from Tito Puente! Abbe's getting past the sexy tricks of other records here – and singing in a dusky tone that works perfect with Tito's tight, choppy, and highly percussive ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ella Fitzgerald & Count Basie

Ella & Basie
Verve, 1963. Near Mint-
Quincy Jones handles the arrangements, so the set's got plenty of soul – and the band really swings on titles that include "Tea For Two", "Deed I Do", "My Last Affair", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall", ... LP, Vinyl record album

Billie Holiday

Solitude
Verve, 1952. Very Good
Classic Billie Holiday for Verve – sad, blue-tinged, and recorded with great small combo backing – in a mode that really updates the sound of her initial recordings while still keeping the best elements intact! Players include Oscar Peterson, Alvin Stoller, Barney Kessell, and Ray ... LP, Vinyl record album

Manhattan Transfer

Extensions
Atlantic, 1979. Near Mint-
(Cover has light wear and aging, thin edge stains at the top and right side, and is faded a bit at the top seam.) LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, Late 50s. Near Mint-
An excellent album of vocals by the great Joe Williams! Joe's always been a fine singer, but with Basie, he really gets the backing he needs to do his work the best. And although this album isn't as authenico as it might be, it still comes from a time when Verve really knew how to handle singers ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teri Thornton

Devil May Care
Riverside, 1961. Very Good+
One of the best albums from singer Teri Thornton – a jazz vocalist who was really starting to come into her own at the beginning of the 60s, and shines here in a way that's different from some of her bigger label sets! Backings are by Norman Simmons – a pianist we love on his own, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Sinatra

Ring A Ding Ding
Reprise, 1961. Near Mint-
Frank's first album for his own label – Reprise catalog number 1001, a number that must have made Sinatra proud! The album's got a really swinging feel that befits the title, and which follows in the best Capitol work by Nelson Riddle. Things are very jazzy and upbeat, thanks to ... LP, Vinyl record album
