✈

Excellent early material from Stan Getz – some of his first recordings ever, done when both his tenor sound and bop were in their infancy! There's a roughness here that's quite different than the Verve style of the 50s – but that's a nice change, too – and it's compelling to hear a very young Stan already finding his own sound on the horn. The set features a mixture of master and alternate takes, with a few unissued ones as well – and cuts include "Opus De Bop", "And The Angels Swing", "Running Water", "Loaded", "Stan Gets Along", "Slow", and "Stan's Mood".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We have only one grade for non-new CDs at Dusty Groove — "Used CD". This grade is somewhat all-encompassing, but we choose it because we try to offer Used CDs in the best shape possible.

When you purchase a Used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use but if there are significant details or defects we will list them underneath the item — just like we do with LPs — so look there for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details.

All of our Used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. If you purchase a Used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly — and if it does not, then you may return it for a full refund.

Verve, 1954. Used
A classic west coast recording by Stan – recorded at the Shrine Theater in LA in '54, with a group that includes Bob Brookmeyer on trombone and John Williams on piano! The groove is more similar to Stan's eastern sides of the time, given his bandmates here – but the sound is still ... CD

JJ Johnson & Kai Winding

Jay & Kai (Savoy)
Savoy, Early 50s. Used
Excellent early recordings from the team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding – the kind of sides that always remind us how great their twin trombone work could be! The album's lacking the cliches of later albums, and presents both players at their best – soulful and stripped down, grooving ... CD

A real smoker from a young Nat Adderley – a session that has the leader on cornet, working in a tight hardbop combo with Jerome Richardson on tenor and flute, Hank Jones on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums! The tracks are all nicely sharp-edge – that soulful ... CD
