Love & Sunshine (MPS)

LP (Item 649025) MPS (Germany), 1974 — Condition: Near Mint-

One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. Titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "SKJ".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Japanese pressing!)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

MPS (Japan), 1972. Near Mint-
Mellow warmth from the great Monty Alexander – one of his best for MPS, and a trio set cut with Senator Eugene Wright on bass and Bobby Durham on drums! The roundness of Wright's bass makes the best cuts on the album even better – as he rolls around with a subtle sense of soul that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Monty Alexander

Alexander The Great
Pacific Jazz, Mid 60s. Very Good+
Monty Alexander's first album – "presented by" Les McCann, and one that features McCann's core rhythm team of Victor Gaskin on bass and Paul Humphrey on drums. The tracks are short and uncomplicated, played in a soul jazz mode that's quite similar to McCann's albums from the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kovac

Trip To The Mars
Saba/MPS (Germany), 1966. Near Mint-
Don't blame us for the typo in the title – just thank us for carrying such groovy record! The album's a hi-fi space jazz spectacular – featuring some of Eruope's hippest players of the 60s, all coming together under the leadership of Roland Kovac, who composed and arranged this 17-part ... A Prestige pressing of this rare German MPS session by Hampton Hawes – recorded in trio format with backing by two of Europe's best rhythm players, bassist Eberhard Weber and drummer Klaus Weiss – and in a groove that's really wonderful! Just Friends
MPS (Germany), 1975. Near Mint-
This album's a "partner" to the duo's other MPS album, Conversation, which (like this one) was also recorded during a one-week engagement at the Domicile nightclub in Munich. MPS (Germany), 1980. Very Good+
That's five flies in the title – each of them warranted, given the incredible energy of Cecil Taylor on the keys of the piano! Friedrich Gulda

It's All One
MPS (Germany), 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Amazing stuff – and one of the hippest records ever cut by pianist Friedrich Gulda! Unlike some of his other more modernist efforts, this one's got a really free swing to it – and it features a spare stripped-down approach that has Gulda's work on piano and "electra piano" ... Jean Luc Ponty

Sunday Walk
MPS, 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold
One of Ponty's best albums – a more straight-ahead late 60s session for MPS, without the fusion noodling of later years! The group's a hip quartet – with Ponty on violin, Wolfgang Dauner on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pederson on bass, and Daniel Humair on drums – and Ponty's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Sugarcane Harris

Cup Full Of Dreams
MPS, 1973. Near Mint-
One of our favorite albums by Don Sugarcane Harris – largely because it's got more of a jazz component than some of the others! Harris is still playing violin on the set, but the real charm seems to come from the tightness of the group – which features some lesser-known LA players on ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Shearing

Way We Are (US pressing)
MPS, 1974. Near Mint-
Funky and Latiny! Although we don't normally dig records by George Shearing, this cool 1974 session for MPS is a nice groover with a good 70's sound that adds a lot of tight rhythm to Shearing's often-sleepy playing – coming up with a whole new sound that has some really wonderful moments! ... Volker Kriegel

Octember Variations
MPS (Germany), 1977. Near Mint-
Funky fusion from guitarist Volker Kriegel – working here on a mid 70s session for MPS – not as totally far out as his earlier sessions for the label, but in a way that makes up for the difference with plenty of funk! Kriegel's sound is wonderful – clean, but never smooth – ... LP, Vinyl record album
