Georgie Fame

LP (Item 647006) Island, Mid 70s — Condition: Near Mint-

A real lost chapter in the career of singer Georgie Fame – mid 70s material recorded for Island Records! The sound of Fame during these years is a bit of an extension of his previous work at Columbia – not really the jazz or R&B of his roots, and more a complicated blend of hip pop modes, all inflected with some of the Jamaican sensibilities you might expect from Island – yet never in a way that's too cliched, or a silly pop take on reggae. Instrumentation is often a bit laidback and stripped-down – and there's a fair bit of organ and electric piano in the mix, both instruments that help bring out the hipper qualities of Georgie's vocals, and set him up nicely for the 70s.  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original US pressing.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+
In our opinion, this "comeback" material by Rushing was way better than his original work from the late 30s. He's got more of a sense of control here, and his approach to the material is extremely thoughtful, and always tinged with a good sense of jazz, making it swing a bit more than on ... Sarah Vaughan

Swingin' Easy
EmArcy, 1954/1957. Very Good+
Very nice jazz-oriented material that has Sarah working with Jimmy Jones, one of her best accompanists, or John Malachi, who was in Billy Eckstine's band at the same time Sarah was with the group. All the tracks have nice small combo instrumentation – and Sarah keeps things nice and warm ... LP, Vinyl record album

Louis Prima & Keely Smith

Las Vegas Prima Style
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+
Wonderfully swinging material from the great Louis Prima! The set was caught live in Louis' main stomping grounds, Las Vegas – and backing is by a tightly matched version of Sam Butera & The Witnesses. 9 tracks in all, a couple of them medleys, including "Embraceable You/I Got It ... Lambert, Hendricks & Ross

Swingers!
World Pacific, 1958. Very Good+
One of the rarest albums ever recorded by the hiply swinging vocal trio of Jon Hendricks, Dave Lambert, and Annie Ross – a live session from 1958, with backing by a group that includes Zoot Sims, Russ Freeman, and Jim Hall. The feel here is really wonderful – a lot less hokey than on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Sinatra

Nice & Easy
Capitol, 1960. Sealed
Frank's last solid album for Capitol, and an easily swinging set that points the way towards the confident maturity of the Reprise years. The title tune, "Nice and Easy", is a classic swinger with great backing by Nelson Riddle – and the rest of the album's selection of tunes is a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Kenny Rankin

Silver Morning
Warner, 1974. Very Good
Kenny Rankin at the height of his powers – working in an amazing blend of styles that includes bits of folk, jazz, and bossa – all wrapped together with a really warm feel overall! The album's got a somewhat full feel – but like Kenny's best work on his debut, there's a really ... LP, Vinyl record album

Etta Jones

From The Heart
Prestige, 1962. Very Good
A beautiful album of heartfelt vocal tracks by a young Etta Jones – featuring arrangements by Oliver Nelson that rank among the best sort that he was penning for vocalists of this sort during the 60s. Etta's got a nice mix of material here, and although some of the tracks are a bit well-known ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, Late 50s. Very Good
Here's a wonderful vocalist – one we'd never heard of until this album! Jean recorded this one in the San Francisco scene of the late 50s – with backings by a trio led by husband/drummer Bill Young, in a lightly tippling mode that reminds us a lot of Blossom Dearie's best work from the ... Nazz
SGC, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold
Genius early pop from Todd Rundgren & Nazz – work that's much more hard-rocking than some of Todd's later hits, but still with an undeniable songwriting brilliance!
