Tough

LP (Item 6468) Cadet, 1957 — Condition: Very Good+
An obscure Art Blakey session from that unusual year of 1957 – a time when the Jazz Messengers had a very striking lineup – with Jackie McLean on alto, Bill Hardman on trumpet, and Sam Dockery on piano! The set was recorded in Minneapolis – a further mystery for the date, given that it came out on Chess from Chicago – but the set's a nice one, with long tracks that include "Flight To Jordu", "Scotch Blues", "Transfiguration", and "Exhibit A".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

United Artists, 1962. Very Good
A really unusual live set from the great Art Blakey – his only album for the United Artists label, but one that continues the tradition of the expanded group style he was starting to use at Blue Note! Seminal work from Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers – recorded at a time when that group was really coming together! Kenny Burrell

Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Instead, the whole thing's more of a cool Chicago take on soul jazz – with these great large arrangements from Richard Evans, backing strong ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Maiden Voyage
Cadet, 1968. Very Good+
One of the key records from the Cadet/Concept scene in late 60s Chicago – a tremendous collaboration between pianist Ramsey Lewis and arranger Charles Stepney – and the kind of record that took soul and jazz to a whole new level! Ramsey Lewis

Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album

Goin' Latin
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Goin Latin, and goin groovy too – thanks to some wonderful arrangements from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans – who really helps Ramsey Lewis open up his sound on the set! A very nicely selected 2LP set of tracks from Stitt's oft-overlooked years at Argo/Chess! Lou Donaldson

Rough House Blues
Cadet, 1964. Very Good+
One of Lou's more unique sides of the 60s – as the album features him as the main soloist over arrangements by a group headed up by Oliver Nelson.
