❔

One of the maestro's greatest! From the instruments spiraling off to infinity on the cover, to the tracks played in the unique crazy Esquivel "wah wah" style, the album stands as one of the finest examples of (and obstacle courses for) modern high fidelity – a really dynamic set of instrumental tunes that perfectly display the powers of the legendary Juan Garcia Esquivel! Instrumentation is quite full – lots of horns that blast one minute, disappear the next – with lots of odd guitar bits, percussive elements, and other cool twists and turns to keep things plenty darn interesting – even when the tunes themselves are familiar ones. Tracks include "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Music Makers", "Frenesi", "So Rare", "Take The A Train", "Harlem Nocturne", "Autumn Leaves", and "Macarena". As the cover warns, this one is for "Hi-Fanatics"!  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Living Stereo pressing with deep groove.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

RCA, 1959. Near Mint-
Juan Garcia's at his best here – gazing into a telescope on the cover, looking at the stars and contemplating his next musical direction. For that, the session leaps into a swinging hi-fi mode that brings the hi-ghest fi-delity to the band's nutty approach to arrangements. Esquivel's ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA, 1958. Very Good+
One of the most memorable Esquivel albums, and perhaps the first record that really let him hit his fantastic mix of off-beat orchestrations and spacey electronicized production! The arrangements are splendid, with echoey piano lines in the front that seem to trail off into the stratosphere. ... LP, Vinyl record album
RCA (Mexico), Mid 50s. Good+
Holy cow! A rare early Esquivel album, recorded in Mexico in the years before he came to the US! The record shows Esquivel's roots in the post-swing era, leading a big band that runs through everything from moody standards to souped up "rock & roll" material. The setting appears to ... Follies Of Paris
RCA, 1956. Very Good+ Gatefold
This is a pretty nifty package that covers the music of Paris nightlife from the 1890s to the 1950s. The album cover is a nice half-gatefold sleeve featuring, of course, some follies ladies. The tunes are grouped into 12 medleys and feature a lot of songs including "Paris, Je T'Aime D'Amour&q ... LP, Vinyl record album

Six Hours Past Sunset

Moody and mellow – and perfect for late nite listening! The album has the tinkling piano of Mancini set over lush orchestrations – breezy, yet dark at the same time, outwardly simple, but filled with complex riffing and sophisticated washes of color and emotion.
