Gerry Mulligan & The Concert Jazz Band Live At The Village Vanguard

LP (Item 64504) Verve, 1960 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold
A sweet little large group session from Gerry – a bit harder swinging than some of his mid 50s small group work, but still with that mellifluous glide that's the trademark Mulligan sound! Arrangements are by some great talents – including Al Cohn, Johnny Mandel, and Bob Brookmeyer, who also plays valve trombone on the set – and titles include "Blueport", "Body & Soul", "Black Nightgown", and "Let My People Be".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(70s Japanese Polydor pressing, MV 2057 – with obi and insert.)

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Gerry Mulligan

Profile (Trip)
Mercury, 1955. Near Mint-
A pretty obscure session by Gerry – recorded in 1955, and featuring Jon Eardly on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, and Bob Brookmeyer on trombone. Gerry actually plays a bit of piano, in addition to his usual baritone – and the set bubbles with a lightly swinging, slightly modern feel that' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Arranger
Columbia, Late 40s/1957. Near Mint-
Gerry Mulligan material from three different stretches – all featuring his talents as an arranger! The set includes very early sides with Gene Krupa in the mid 40s, work with Elliot Lawrence in 1949, and then Gerry's own work as a leader in 1957! LP, Vinyl record album

Early Pacific Jazz material from Gerry Mulligan! LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1962. Near Mint-
A really wonderful collection of live work from Gerry's early 60s Concert Jazz Band – a really forward-thinking large group that was one of Mulligan's greatest accomplishments of the time! In some ways, the ensemble worked in a sound that was like that of Mulligan's small group recordings of ... LP, Vinyl record album
Verve, 1963. Very Good+
The sound of Gerry Mulligan in the early 60s – and one of the best records by his larger than usual Concert Jazz Band! Given Gerry's piano-less experiments of the 50s, it's surprising to actually have him as the pianist on this session – hitting the keys with a nice light touch, so ... LP, Vinyl record album
Pacific Jazz, 1957. Very Good
Gerry Mulligan meets up with a great array of 50s modernists here – in specially setting dedicated to all Mulligan-penned compositions! Although a radical player himself on the baritone sax, Gerry also added something strong to the 50s jazz catalog with his great tunes from the early days ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Night Lights
Philips, 1963. Near Mint-
A masterpiece from Gerry Mulligan – and one of those key 60s albums that marks such a huge shift in his sound from the 50s! The approach here is very cool and compressed – but not in an LA "cool jazz" way – as the music has a more urbane, sophisticated vibe that's very ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gerry Mulligan

Concert Jazz Band
Verve, 1960. Very Good
Great large group material from Gerry Mulligan – and a record that definitely defines the sound of his famous Concert Jazz Band of the early 60s! Little Big Horn
GRP, 1983. Near Mint-
As close as Gerry Mulligan ever came to cutting an album of funky jazz – an electric-tinged set recorded with arrangements by Dave Grusin, who also plays electric piano on the set, which makes for an odd, but surprisingly pleasing contrast with Gerry's baritone. Tracks are long with smooth ... LP, Vinyl record album
EmArcy, 1955. Very Good
A strong 50s session from Gerry – a bit like some of his work for the Pacific Jazz label, but perhaps a bit more biting and modern. The group's a sextet with Jon Eardley on trumpet, Zoot Sims on tenor, Dave Bailey on drums, Bob Brookmeyer on trombone, and Peck Morrison on bass – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

A split LP – with one classic album, and a great organ date too! First up is all the material from Smokin At The Half Note, including some (then) unreleased tracks. The set is one of the greatest 60s recordings from the Wyton Kelly Trio – thanks to some wonderful guest work from ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dizzy Gillespie

Portrait Of Duke Ellington
Verve, 1960. Very Good+
A portrait of Duke, done by Dizzy – and one that's got a whole different feel than you might think! Gillespie's working here with arrangements by a young Clare Fischer – who takes Ellington's themes and recasts them with an even deeper sense of color and tone – one that pushes ...
