Vibrations (aka Ghosts)

LP (Item 6443) Arista Freedom, 1964/1975 — Condition: Very Good

A seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great!  © 1996-2019, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Cover has some seam splitting and mostly split spine.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

BB, 1970. Sealed
Fantastic late work from Ayler! The record is one of the last he ever recorded – and it's a no-nonsense live set, without any of the silly influences of some of his late Impulse sides. Most of the material features Ayler blowing long free solos, with a tightness and directness missing from ... LP, Vinyl record album
Relyable (Italy), 1966. Near Mint-
Rare live work – recorded in Germany in 1966 – with Donald Ayler on trumpet, Michel Sampson on violin, Bill Folwell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! Titles include "Alpha", "AC", "Ghosts", "Bells", "Jesus", and "Omega". LP, Vinyl record album
Impulse, Late 60s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A great collection of Ayler's late work for Impulse – some of his most unusual sides ever cut to wax, and very different from his work on labels like ESP. The general feel is one of searching – as Ayler works in a number of different modes to try to reach new audiences, and hit new ... LP, Vinyl record album
Arista Freedom, 1974. Sealed
Live solo work by Roland Hanna – a set that starts out kind of slow, as Hanna performs 2 Ellington crowd-pleasers – but which then really takes off as he moves into his own beautiful compositions! These really have Hanna unfolding on the keys, and playing with a rich lyrical quality ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dave Burrell

High Won – High Two
Arista Freedom, 1968. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold
A pretty great and very strange album by avant pianist Dave Burrell! Side one features an extended tune called "West Side Story", which is basically a medley of tunes from the musical, played with a nice dark edge by Burrell and a trio, plus additional tambourine work by Pharoah Sanders! ... Blue Note, 1965. Near Mint-
Donald Byrd's second foray into the "with voices" genre – done with the same arranging talents of Coleridge Perkinson, the lyrical modernist who made Donald's A New Perspective such a success! The group that plays with Byrd is excellent, and includes Freddie Roach, Herbie Hancock, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Donald Byrd

Blackjack
Blue Note, 1967. Sealed
An incredible album from Donald Byrd – hard, funky, and with more of an edge than most of his other Blue Note work! The sound on the album's incredibly sinister – really concerned with downward chord turns in moody rhythms – played with a real sense of soul by a frontline that ... LP, Vinyl record album

Freddie Hubbard

Goin' Up
Blue Note, 1961. Near Mint-
A real burner from Freddie Hubbard's early years at Blue Note – filled with rich hues, colors, and tones! The group's a quintet – supported by lyrical rhythms from the trio of McCoy Tyner on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – working alongside Freddie's ... Hal Galper

Guerilla Band
Mainstream, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
Electric piano genius from Hal Galper – one of his best non-acoustic albums ever, and a set that's filled with moody colors and changes! The album's a fair bit more dynamic than some of Galper's other albums from the 70s – with horns from the Brecker Brothers, guitar from Bob Mann, and ... LP, Vinyl record album
Fantasy, 1962. Sealed
Solidly righteous jazz from the Max Roach of the 60s – recorded at a time when the player was really breaking away from his straighter hardbop roots, and delving deeper into more freely soulful jazz expression! The record only features 2 long tracks – each a side apiece – played ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tom Scott

Great Scott!
A&M, Early 70s. Very Good+
A nice one by Tom Scott! He's veering here towards the more tightly produced sound of later years, but the overall feel is still quite nice – and the record has some good funky moments, and players like Howard Roberts, Emil Richards, and Mike Wofford really make the session cook with a ... Eddie Harris

Instant Death
Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Eddie's using his electric sax in a really great way – not as a gimmick at all, but as a way of linking both the soulful and ... LP, Vinyl record album
