Love Me (aka Jerry Butler Esq)

LP (Item 64365) Vee Jay, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
A beautiful early record from Jerry Butler – filled with some lesser-known gems from his Vee Jay years, all sung in that fantastic Iceman style! There's a real hint of sadness here – and tracks like "You Go Right Through Me", "The Challenge", "If You Let Me", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Lost", and "No End Or Time" show Jerry as a whole new kind of male soul singer, with a depth of emotion that's practically infinite – expressed in a style that's never too over the top!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear, aging, faint stain on the back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Philadelphia International, 1978. Near Mint-
After working with Gamble & Huff on his big hits for Mercury in the late 60s, Jerry returned to work with the pair in the late 70s on their own Philly International label – stepping out with the same sweet groove that the Philly sound had brought to Lou Rawls, in a way that helped Butler ... Jerry Butler

Power Of Love
Mercury, 1973. Near Mint-
An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! Johnny Bristol produced the record, and he gives it a nice sweet 70s soul groove, similar to what he was using in his own work from the time. And typical of Jerry's albums from the early 70s, there's lots of nice original material, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Spice Of Life
Mercury, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
Perhaps the greatest record Jerry Butler made in the 70s, and a very tight bit of baroque Chicago soul with arrangements and production by Samuel F. Brown III. The tracks are a good mix of originals and covers, and they all show Jerry going way past his Gamble & Huff/Mercury years – into ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Richard

Little Richard Is Back
Vee Jay, 1964. Near Mint-
An early comeback for Little Richard – one of many over the years, and the one that's probably closest to the sound that first got him started! Although issued on Vee Jay in the 60s, the record's got less of a soul groove than you'd expect – and features Richard working on the west ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Chandler

Duke Of Earl (Vee Jay)
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
A sweet soul classic from the young Gene Chandler! The record is built around Gene's hit "Duke Of Earl" – and it features Gene in a ridiculous looking "Duke" costume on the cover – but the record's a great one overall, and features some excellent late-night soul ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vee Jay, 1961. Very Good
A real classic from Chicago soulman Dee Clark – and one of those crazy Vee Jay albums packaged in a cover with an image of young white love! Despite that cloying image, though, the record has a tremendous depth – and is a great illustration of the versatility of Clark at his best, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dee Clark

Keep It Up
Vee Jay/Charly (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Very Good+
A great collection of Dee's best work for the Vee Jay label – and even better than the usual hit collection, because it features cuts he recorded with The Dells, The Kook Gents, The Upsetters, and The Delegates. Dee was one of the label's most versatile singers, and as you'll hear on this ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vee Jay, 1960. Near Mint-
Dee Clark cracked the charts big with a few crossover hits – but he's an excellent soul singer with a raspy tone that almost set the stage for some of the deeper soul acts to come in the 60s! The style here is very much in the mode of some of Jackie Wilson's best for Brunswick from the early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Players Association

Players Association
Vanguard, 1977. Near Mint-
The fantastic first album from The Players Association – a group who may well have gotten their name for the great jazzy musicians in their lineup! Players Association are best known for their disco grooves, but they've got a core sense of instrumentation that's really a cut above – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Melvin Van Peebles

Brer Soul
A&M, 1968. Very Good Gatefold
Amazing stuff from Melvin Van Peebles! Brer Soul is a mad mix of funky soul insanity and straight up wisdom – a mix of moods that also seems to inform the best of his films, now that we think about it – and it's put together with enough wild clashes of culture to shake anyone up. Funk ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roy Ayers

In The Dark
Columbia, 1984. Near Mint-
Roy Ayers in a seductive mid 80s mode – his first for Columbia – and a record with some incredibly nice moments that blow away most of his contemporaries! The synth soul and drum machine era might seem like an odd fit for Roy's jazzy vibes, but it actually works really well here! You ... LP, Vinyl record album
