Love Me (aka Jerry Butler Esq)

LP (Item 64365) Vee Jay, Early 60s — Condition: Very Good+
Just Sold Out!

LP, Vinyl record album

❔
A beautiful early record from Jerry Butler – filled with some lesser-known gems from his Vee Jay years, all sung in that fantastic Iceman style! There's a real hint of sadness here – and tracks like "You Go Right Through Me", "The Challenge", "If You Let Me", "Don't Take Your Love From Me", "Lost", and "No End Or Time" show Jerry as a whole new kind of male soul singer, with a depth of emotion that's practically infinite – expressed in a style that's never too over the top!  © 1996-2023, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Mono rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear, aging, faint stain on the back.)

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Mercury, Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint-
A collection put together in the 80s of Jerry Butlers fantastic material from the late 60s when he went to Philly to work with the then young Gamble and Huff team. A dozen classic numbers in all, including "Only The Strong Survive", "A Brand New Me", "Never Give You ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Power Of Love
Mercury, 1973. Very Good+
An easy album to overlook, but not without some nice moments! Johnny Bristol produced the record, and he gives it a nice sweet 70s soul groove, similar to what he was using in his own work from the time. And typical of Jerry's albums from the early 70s, there's lots of nice original material, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jerry Butler

Sweet Sixteen
Mercury, 1974. Very Good
A lost little gem from Jerry – recorded towards the end of his years with Mercury. The record's got Jerry working in a much hipper style than before, drawing off the pool of younger Chicago soul talents that he'd begun to collect on some of his earlier albums for Mercury – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album
Mercury, 1970. Near Mint-
Seminal work by one of our favorite soul singers of all time! Jerry first came to fame with The Impressions and on his own in the early 60s – singing dark moody easy tunes that well earned him the nickname of "Iceman". In the late 60s, though, he moved onto Mercury where he broke ... LP, Vinyl record album
Vee Jay, 1960. Very Good+
Dee Clark cracked the charts big with a few crossover hits – but he's an excellent soul singer with a raspy tone that almost set the stage for some of the deeper soul acts to come in the 60s! The style here is very much in the mode of some of Jackie Wilson's best for Brunswick from the early ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dee Clark

Best Of Dee Clark
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Near Mint-
Classic Chicago soul from the great Dee Clark – one of the most versatile vocalists ever to work for Vee Jay Records, as you'll hear on this set! Dee could be sweet one minute, rocking the next – and had a great vocal range that was always used well on the range of material he sung. ... LP, Vinyl record album

Betty Everett & Jerry Butler

Delicious Together
Vee Jay, 1964. Very Good+
Betty Everett and Jerry Butler certainly are delicious together – and the pair have more than enough great energy to hold on strong throughout this entire album of duets! Although Motown is probably best remembered as the home of the male/female duet mode of the 60s – Vee Jay certainly ... LP, Vinyl record album
Atco/Atlantic, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the coolest, funkiest records we've ever heard from Dr John – thanks to lots of guest help from The Meters! The vibe here is a bit tighter than some of Mac's previous records – not as trippy as his first few for Atco – but the sound is still nice and sharp, and Allen ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stevie Wonder

Innervisions
Tamla, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the best Stevie Wonder albums ever! Stevie's moving into god-like territory here – handling a multitude of styles, all well, and crafting some of the most sophisticated soul of his generation. The album's got the same jazzy references you'll find on the best work by Donny Hathaway ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bobby Womack

Understanding
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+
Killer 70s work from Bobby Womack – reinventing himself here in a great style that keeps all the warmth and soulfulness of his Minit recordings, and gives it a healthy dose of 70s soul production – creating a sweet new groove that pushed Womack into a huge new audience at the time! ... Johnny Guitar Watson

Love Jones
DJM, 1980. Near Mint-
One of the last great records by Johnny Guitar Watson – and an album that's got some wonderfully subdued moments, which is a real relief after some of the too-funky bits on some of his other sets from the late 70s! Johnny returns to the tight soul of the mid 70s Fantasy LPs – still ... LP, Vinyl record album
Smash, 1964. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the stranger James Brown albums from the 60s! The record is one of the only vocal albums he cut for the Smash label – and it was issued during a time when James was strangely contracted to two labels – King and Smash. His dual contract situation was that he couldn't record any ... LP, Vinyl record album
