Firefly

LP (Item 64334) CTI, 1977 — Condition: Near Mint-
Gatefold

A rare CTI entry from funky flute master Jeremy Steig – a musician whose style is a great fit for the label! There's more of an electric vibe here than on Steig's earlier records – but that creates a nice current of soul that really helps things take off in a nicely different way. The record features Steig's funky flute in front of some larger arrangements by David Matthews – and the style of the record is a blend of CTI electric and some of the choppier bits of earlier Steig albums, blended with some mellow soul lead vocals on three tracks by Googie Coppola – who sings in a manner that's almost like Minnie Riperton! Tracks include the funky groover "Hopscotch", plus the nice soul tracks "Firefly", "Living Inside Your Love", and "Everything Is Coming To The Light".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Near Mint - (minus)

  • Black vinyl that may show a slight amount of dust or dirt.
  • Should still be very shiny under a light, even with slight amount of dust on surface.
  • One or two small marks that would make an otherwise near perfect record slightly less so. These marks cannot be too deep, and should only be surface marks that won't affect play, but might detract from the looks.
  • May have some flaws and discoloration in the vinyl, but only those that would be intrinsic to the pressing. These should disappear when the record is tilted under the light, and will only show up when looking straight at the record. (Buddah and ABC pressings from the 70's are a good example of this.)
  • May have some slight marks from aging of the paper sleeve on the vinyl.
  • Possible minor surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

George Benson

White Rabbit
CTI, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. Freddie Hubbard

Polar AC
CTI, 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold
Warm and wonderful work from Freddie Hubbard – a killer of an album recorded for CTI, and one of his most soulful efforts for the label! The album's got a bit more of a human heart than some of the more cosmic sessions Freddie cut at the time – a bit more contemplative and ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Matthews

Dune
CTI, 1977. Very Good+
One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from arranger David Matthews – a set that draws inspiration from Frank Herbert's Dune, and sends Dave out into space with a whole bunch of sci fi-tinged funky numbers! Matthews has already had plenty of CTI arranging experience by the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Wes Montgomery

Day In The Life
CTI/A&M, 1967. Very Good Gatefold
Mindblowing! Wes Montgomery

Road Song
A&M/CTI, 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold
Beautifully lofty work from the great Wes Montgomery – a set that was recorded quite late in his too-short career, and really points the way towards some of the sophisticated sounds that might have followed, had Wes not left this planet all too soon! Don Sebesky is at the head of the charts ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hubert Laws

Afro-Classic
CTI, 1970. Very Good+ Gatefold
An amazing album – and the cornerstone of the CTI sound! The mode here takes off some of the darker edges from James' earlier sound, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

George Benson

Bad Benson
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy ... Randy Weston

Blue Moses
CTI, 1972. Very Good- Gatefold
Beautiful work from Randy Weston – and a unique electric session from the 70s! Jazz Contemporaries (Keno Duke)

Reasons In Tonality
Strata East, 1973. Very Good+
One of the greatest Strata East albums, and one of the few albums ever by Keno Duke (and all of them are great).
