Hank Ballard & The Midnighters Sing Their Greatest Jukebox Hits

LP (Item 64249) King, 1950s — Condition: Sealed

A classic set of hard rockin R&B from Hank Ballard and the legendary Midnighters – as raw a batch of vocal group tracks you'd be hard pressed to find! The album features plenty of tunes from their "Annie" cycle of songs – including "Work With Me Annie", "Annie Had A Baby", "Annie's Aunt Fannie", and "Henry's Got Flat Feet" – plus gems that include "Sexy Ways", "Get It", "It's Love Baby (24 Hours A Day)", "Tore Up Over You", and "She's The One".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Super Bad is right! This is hard-hitting funky James – from the badass cover right down to the extended tracks on the record, which point the way towards the hard live jamming of the classic Payback years! James Brown

Sex Machine
King, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold
James Brown cooking it live – recorded (as the cover says) "at home in Augusta, Georgia with his bad self"! The groove here is a nice extension of earlier Apollo modes – one that shows the increasing funkiness of the James Brown Band, captured with a raw power that few other ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, Late 50s. Sealed
Hank Ballard definitely falls into the "one and only" category – especially with work as great as his sounds on this classic album for King Records! Hank sings in a style that's as badass as his look on the cover – as raw in these cuts as James Brown was during the same ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, 1967. Near Mint-
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! The album's kind of a grab bag of earlier sides that James recorded for King, but it's a perfect showcase for his amazing sound in ... LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown

Prisoner Of Love
King, 1963. Near Mint-
A classic early 60s set from James Brown – one that showcases the mellower side of his talents on a host of easygoing ballads! The approach is a bit like that used with Etta James over at Chess – as James rough-edged vocals are mixed with sweeter string arrangements from Sammy Lowe and ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Got The Feelin'
King, 1968. Very Good
Funky funky funky! A nice one on King that shows the direction James Brown would take in the 70s – a bit harder and more funky than before, with even more of a focus on the instrumental talents of the ensemble! The band here is super-sharp – playing with that tightly focused, highly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Willie John

Free At Last
King, 1950s/Early 60s. Near Mint-
A pretty great collection of Little Willie John's classic work for King – issued in the 60s, after Willie got out of prison, with a title and an image of a jail cell that will never let him forget his debt to society! Fortunately, the music washes away all memories of that trouble, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Imaginations

Good Stuff
20th Century, 1974. Very Good
A great bit of Chicago soul from the 70s – by a short-lived group who were sort of an offshoot of Brighter Side Of Darkness, who had scored earlier in the decade with the falsetto hit "Love Jones". This one was produced by Clarence Johnson/Star Vue Productions, and licensed to 20th ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hotbed
Stax, 1978. Near Mint-
We used to pass this one up, because it was later, and hence not as good as the other Stax stuff. But then we discovered the nice extended version of "Feel Like Makin' Love", which is a nice solid groover. Also includes the tracks "Use Me", "I'm Gonna Have to Tell ... LP, Vinyl record album
