Hank Ballard & The Midnighters Sing Their Greatest Jukebox Hits

LP (Item 64249) King, 1950s — Condition: Sealed

A classic set of hard rockin R&B from Hank Ballard and the legendary Midnighters – as raw a batch of vocal group tracks you'd be hard pressed to find! The album features plenty of tunes from their "Annie" cycle of songs – including "Work With Me Annie", "Annie Had A Baby", "Annie's Aunt Fannie", and "Henry's Got Flat Feet" – plus gems that include "Sexy Ways", "Get It", "It's Love Baby (24 Hours A Day)", "Tore Up Over You", and "She's The One".  © 1996-2020, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(80s pressing.)

Sealed

This is what it says, that the record is still held fast in shrink-wrap. We tend to be pretty suspicious about these things, so if the shrink-wrap doesn't look original, or if the record seems to have undergone some damage over time, we'll probably take it out of the wrapper to ensure that it's in good shape — which is why we don't have more of these. In some cases the shrink-wrap may be torn in spots, but if it's not possible the record has been taken out and played, the record will still qualify as "Sealed".

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

King, 1967. Very Good
Raw soul, indeed – a term that could have been coined for James Brown's vocal approach, and which probably makes one of its first appearances here on a record! James Brown

It's A Mother
King, 1969. Very Good
A definite mother from James Brown – the kind of all-funky album that few of his contemporaries could ever hope to match! King/Audio Lab, Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint-
Tremendous vocals from Bull Moose Jackson – a deep-voiced singer from the King R&B years, but one who also had a sensitive touch as well! There's a sophistication here that's different from most of Jackson's contemporaries on King – almost the mature masculine sound you'd find in ... LP, Vinyl record album
King, Late 50s. Sealed
Hank Ballard definitely falls into the "one and only" category – especially with work as great as his sounds on this classic album for King Records! Hank sings in a style that's as badass as his look on the cover – as raw in these cuts as James Brown was during the same ... LP, Vinyl record album

Little Willie John

Free At Last
King, 1950s/Early 60s. Near Mint-
A pretty great collection of Little Willie John's classic work for King – issued in the 60s, after Willie got out of prison, with a title and an image of a jail cell that will never let him forget his debt to society! Fortunately, the music washes away all memories of that trouble, and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Skipworth & Turner
Warner, 1986. Near Mint-
A really great later Patrick Adams production – done for the always catchy duo of Rodney Skipworth & Phil Turner, a real bright spot in mainstream mid 80s soul! The pair really have a way with a tune here – building things as the tracks go along, but never in a way that's too ... LP, Vinyl record album

Teresa

Class Reunion
Dream, 1979. Near Mint-
An unusual retro-styled soul set done for Salsoul's short-lived Dream subsidiary – sung by Teresa in a set of modes that sometimes recall older music of years past, in keeping with her little schoolgirl look on the cover! The approach much be said to echo the influence of the 50s in the 70s ... LP, Vinyl record album

Flying Start
Fantasy, 1974. Very Good
Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album
