Feelin' Good At The Cadillac Club

LP (Item 641076) Gamble, 1968 — Condition: Very Good
An excellent early album from Billy Paul – done in a mode that's quite different than his bigger hits of the 70s! The record's almost more of a jazz outing, but with a definite soulful twist – done in this righteous mode that's not unlike some of the best Nina Simone material from the same time – in a way that really shows some of the deeper strains in Billy's style. Billy's singing with a small piano trio, and his voice is rich and soulful in a way that you don't always get on his later recordings – quite powerful even with limited backings, at a level that really blows us away. The set's nearly all covers, but Billy's interpretations are fantastic, and he turns the tracks into something completely different than you're used to – in the same way that Nina Simone and Isaac Hayes were doing at the time with contemporary hits. Tracks include "Bluesette", "That's Life", "Feelin' Good", "Just In Time", and the Kenny Gamble original, "Missing You".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Cleveland Eaton

Half & Half
Gamble, 1973. Near Mint-
One of a few rare albums recorded as a leader from bassist Cleveland Eaton – a player who first rose to fame with Maurice White in the second Ramsey Lewis trio – and one who gave the world some amazingly hip records on the Black Jazz label in the 70s! This set is a unique effort for ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bill Summers

Straight To The Bank
Prestige, 1978. Very Good
Probably Bill Summers' best LP for Prestige, and certainly the one in which he got his groove straightened out, and more in the pocket than on some of his other ones. The title cut's a massive groover, and the LP version ends in a cool acappella sweep on the chorus that sounds (in our opinion) ... LP, Vinyl record album

LaBelle

LaBelle
Warner, 1971. Very Good
A real breakthrough in female soul for the 70s – the initial album from Labelle – a set that's very different material than the group were doing on their girl group singles in the 60s! The trio here is legendary – Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – three ... LP, Vinyl record album
Metro, Late 60s. Very Good+
Sonny Lester produced this set of stringy versions of big Motown hits, with a sound that's an obvious attempt to try to reach the Soulful Strings level of soufulness. Tracks include "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In The Name Of Love", and "Back In My ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bunny Sigler

Keep Smilin'
Philadelphia International, 1974. Near Mint-
One of Bunny's earliest, and one of his best. Although some of the tracks have an uptempo pre-disco feel, there's none of the excesses of his later albums for Gold Mind. Instead, there's a solid Philly soul groove, and great production by Bunny, with arrangements by Norman Harris and Ronnie Baker. ... LP, Vinyl record album
Chess/MCA, Late 60s. Near Mint-
A collection of tracks recorded during the late 60s and early 70s – when the Dells were at their peak, recording at Cadet with arrangers and producers like Charles Stepney, Bobby Miller, and Don Davis. Titles include "Love Is Blue (I Can Sing A Rainbow)", "There Is", ... LP, Vinyl record album
Bell, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
The cover to this one has The 5th Dimension sporting some heavy-duty outfits – and the album's got an equally bold sound to match! The group's still in very familiar territory here – working under the direction of Bones Howe – but they're also completely confident in their bag ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gene Chandler & Jerry Butler

One & One
Mercury, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold
A classic collaboration between 2 of the godfathers of Chicago soul – recorded at a time when both of them had emerged as proven big-sales artists, and were given the freedom to experiment in different styles with side projects like this. Here, they're singing in almost a Curtis Mayfield-esqu ... LP, Vinyl record album

T-Connection

Magic
Dash/TK, 1977. Near Mint-
Plenty of Magic here from T-Connection – a clubby set of tracks, yet one that's still put together more like a funk combo record from the mid 70s! The instrumentation is mindblowing – impeccable guitar and basslines, set to snapping rhythms that really capture the best Miami funk mode ... LP, Vinyl record album

Candi Staton

Stand By Your Man
Fame, Late 60s. Very Good+
Wonderful early work from deep soul singer Candi Staton – early southern work, and done with a very different vibe than the clubbier cuts she'd deliver at the end of the 70s! Fame Records giant Rick Hall produced, and the whole thing was recorded with the kind of raw hard sound that Muscle ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jose Feliciano

Alive Alive O!
RCA, 1969. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
A beautiful little live album from Jose Feliciano – recorded in London at the end of the 60s, with a sound that's often more stripped down than his studio work of the time! Jose's on vocals and guitar, backed by only a bit of bass and percussion – so the record's almost got the ... LP, Vinyl record album
