✈
❔
A blue-eyed soul classic from the UK scene of the 80s – probably the last truly great album from The Style Council, and a great blend of 60s influences with the post-Jam sound of Paul Weller. The album's got a bit more polish than before, but still none of the too-poppy modes that would mar the group at their end – and Weller's vocals are great, as always – with a sense of warmth we never would have expected in the early days of The Jam. The songwriting's great too, and Mick Talbot manages to give the record a jazzy enough sensibility to please our dusty-tuned ears. Titles include "Homebreakers", "All Gone Away", "Come To Milton Keynes", "Internationalists", "Boy Who Cried Wolf", "A Man Of Great Promise", and "Luck".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good + (plus)

  • Vinyl should be very clean, but can have less luster than near mint.
  • Should still shine under a light, but one or two marks may show up when tilted.
  • Can have a few small marks that may show up easily, but which do not affect play at all. Most marks of this quality will disappear when the record is tilted, and will not be felt with the back of a fingernail.
  • This is the kind of record that will play "near mint", but which will have some signs of use (although not major ones).
  • May have slight surface noise when played.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Say what you want, we love this album! When it came out, we were such big Jam fans that we could never forgive Paul Weller – but now, nearly 20 years later, we're stunned at how great some of the soul songs on the album are. Bram Tchaikovsky

Strange Man Changed Man
Polydor, 1979. Near Mint-
A brilliant debut from Bram Tchaikovsky – a power pop genius, and one who may not be that well remembered these days – but who was equally grabbed up by folks who drinking deep of late 70s sounds by artists like Elvis Costello, Marshall Crenshaw, and The Jam! Who

Quick One
Polydor, 1966. Near Mint-
Maybe the first true moment of genius from The Who – a record that shows that the group aren't just the usual mod rockers of the time – even though they were already pretty darn great in that format! Instead, there's all these little weird bits and odd themes going on – including ... LP, Vinyl record album

B-52s
Warner, 1979. Very Good
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned ... LP, Vinyl record album
