Frankie Beverly and crew can't miss at this point – and as usual, Maze stands head and shoulders above most of its soul contemporaries from the time. The overall feel is nice and warm, with plenty of focus on Frankie's sweet smooth vocals – and the band grooves behind him in a slightly jazzy style that must have sounded like an instant classic at the time and still sounds great today. With the classic "Back In Stride", plus "Reachin Down Inside", "Can't Stop The Love", "Too Many Games" and "Magic". (Includes the printed inner sleeve.)  © 1996-2015, Dusty Groove, Inc.

We realize that there are many different interpretations of the standard grades used for pre-owned vinyl record albums & CD, so we thought we'd offer you the ones that we are working with, so you have an idea what we mean when we give the grade for a non-new item on our pages.

Used Vinyl Grades

Below are stated conditions for a used vinyl records at Dusty Groove. Grading for the cover should be assumed to be near (within a "+" or "-") the grading for the vinyl. If there is significant divergence from the condition of the vinyl, or specific flaws, these will be noted in the comments section of the item. However, please be aware that since the emphasis of this site is towards the music listener, our main concern is with the vinyl of any used item we sell. Additionally, please note that all of our records are graded visually; considering the volume of used vinyl we handle, it is impossible for us to listen to each record. If we spot any significant flaws, we make every attempt to listen through them and note how they play.

The following grading conditions apply to the vinyl component of an album or single:

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Capitol, 1976. Very Good
We don't know much about CM Lord, and this record's the only one we've ever seen from her, but she's got a nice deep soul voice, and the record's a great mix of southern-styled vocals and smoother LA backing. There's some slight country soul tinges to the cuts, but the best parts of the album ... LP, Vinyl record album

Capitol, 1982. Near Mint-
A great album of bass-heavy 80s groove tracks – and the second release by the oft-overlooked BB&Q Band! The record mixes up some nice keyboards with a spacey early breakdance sound, and they sound great over the group's tight rhythm, and surprisingly soulful vocals. The band was one of ... A landmark album that hardly needs any introduction – as it's one of the most famous soundtracks, if not soul records, of the 70s! Isaac Hayes had already surprised music fans with the sophistication of his first few solo albums, which had been issued before this one – but with Shaft, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Late 60s. Very Good
Howard Tate is one of the most overlooked soul singers of the late 60's – and this is his only album from that decade! Part of the problem was probably that he recorded for Verve, a label that didn't really put its soul catalog that well (even though the label cut some excellent uptown sides ... Classic Chess gospel, recorded in Chicago in the mid 60's, and with production by the great Gene Barge, who made so many of Chess' gospel albums sound like their best soul LPs. Includes "I Found A New Doctor", "When My Time Comes", "I Know Better Now", "What Have ... LP, Vinyl record album
